Born into a well-off family, life’s pleasures had left him empty so he rejected the material world. His wanderings led him to Tiruvannamalai where he was quickly adopted by fellow ascetics whose simple dwellings lay near the caves. “It’s necessary for me to avoid attachments,” he explained matter-of-factly.
