We are so lucky to live in Western Australia. As a true-blue sandgroper, I’ve always thought that and have never wanted to live anywhere else. Finally, our separation from not only the world, but the rest of Australia has worked to our advantage and I am so grateful we could get our footy season started and now completed. This year, more than ever, the committee have worked tirelessly to ensure that our club was able to meet the State government health and safety guidelines and WAFC protocols required to play junior sport . It takes a huge amount of behind the scenes work prior to the season starting. This year, we again surpassed 1000 players across the club . Those 1000 kids had to be placed in appropriate spreadsheets ready for allocation into teams. Congratulations to Helen Stapledon, in her first year as Registrar, for her efforts with this task. As in previous years, Sheldon Turner (Auskick) and Andie Fagan (Mods/Opens) did a terrific job with allocations, trying to accommodate all requests. eW fielded 23 Auskick, 21 Modified Rules and 14 Opens teams in 2020, and welcomed our first Starkick players into our Auskick program . Congratulations to John Sobolewski for his efforts with these amazing kids and their families . Without our many game day volunteers, junior sport would not be possible. For many, this is an annual offering of their time . I implore as many of you as possible to become involved so everyone can enjoy being a spectator sometimes. Although recognition is not the reason most people volunteer, the WA Football Awards recognises those who are outstanding in their roles . Congratulations to Sheldon Turner, Jeremy Bowden and John Burton – finalists in their respective categories of the awards. The SDJFC Auskick program was also a finalist in the Auskick Centre category. SDJFC was represented by 4 teams in Grand Finals this year, an extremely difficult task as teams had to finish 1st or 2nd from the shortened home and away season of 10 matches. Congratulations to Year 8 Seahawks and Year 9 Seahawks for winning Premierships and to Year 8 Hawks and Year 9 Hawks who were runners-up in their divisions . Seacrest Reserve was again chosen as a Grand Final venue, hosting 8 games. The Year 9 cohort took over the canteen as part of their fundraising for the 2021 Trip Group which was extremely successful . The Club’s success can also be measured by the multitude of individual honours of current and past players: * Runners-up in the Northern Conference Fairest and Best Awards – Jonas Rocke (18s Hawks), Ben Steinmann (Y9 Seahawks), Alex Walford (Y9 Hawks) and Kaleb White (Y8 Seahawks). * Zac Sadowski and Toby MacDonald (Y10 Hawks) were named in the WA Under 16s squad and past players Blake Morris and Sandon Page made the WA U18s . * Liam Hickmott (Round 7) and Wil Hickmott (Round 1) made their League debuts for Subiaco FC . * Finally, Luke Foley debuted for West Coast in Round 16 v Western Bulldogs. A special thank you to Garry and Jenny Jackson for their tireless efforts in the canteen again this year. With the assistance of the “Friends of Sorrento Duncraig JFC” and other sponsors, the club is able to provide all the equipment required and keep our fees as low as we do . Hopefully 2021 will see the club, in its 50th year, achieve even greater things. I would really love you to share in its success. Volunteer, join the committee, encourage your friends to register…do whatever you can to promote what is an incredible club . Michelle Richards President Sorrento Duncraig Junior Football Club Page 3 2020 Season | Sorrento Duncraig HAWKS Open Rules Summary Well 2020 season was my first year as Opens Co-ordinator at the club and what a interesting season to undertake the role. Covid 19 threw a number of curveballs at us, but despite a couple of weeks when the season looked like a non-starter I think the year was a positive . The season was unusual in many circumstances and the condensed nature of the season resulted in there being an adjustment to the usual finals format. The top four was dispensed with and teams who finished Top 2 at the end of the home and away season automatically went through to Grand Finals . The depth of our club was on display as we ended up having 8 of our Opens teams finishing their seasons in theTop 4 of their competitions. Heading into the final round of the home and away season we had 4 teams fighting for spots in grand finals and 2 teams who had already qualified. When the home & away season ended we managed to have 4 teams in grand finals and were fortunate to have all grand finals at Carine. Grand final day saw plenty of Brown and Gold on display and all teams battled hard in.
