Pacific Spaceflight is the US arm of Copenhagen Suborbitals, a non-profit, DIY manned space program. Recently awarded the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) Breitling Milestone Award, Copenhagen Suborbitals has tested many rockets and guidance systems, using liquid propellants and a unique offshore launch and recovery fleet. While in Copenhagen the focus is on launch vehicles, control systems and the capsule, Pacific Spaceflight is focused on the space suit and life-support systems. Integrating these subsystems began in August 2013, when the first-generation suit was transported to Copenhagen for a series of tests. From 2009 to present Dr. Cameron M. Smith and the Pacific Spaceflight team designed, built and tested a proof-of-concept pressure suit for use in Copenha- gen Suborbitals ‘ Tycho DSII single-person space capsule. After many success- ful tests, including underwater leak-detection, skydiving stability tests, and altitude chamber tests, we are confident of the essential design, which delivers breathing gas, mitigates carbon dioxide buildup, maintains appropriate pres- sure, and regulates the pilot’s temperature. We are currently preparing the Mark III suit for a test flight to 65,000 feet in 2015, to be carried out over international waters on the Baltic Sea. With an ascent rate of around 1,000 feet per minute, the flight should take about an hour for ascent to FL650 and somewhat longer for descent. This test flight will prove the functioning of a pressure suit to be used in Copenha- gen Suborbitals’ manned rocket flights, designed to be Tycho Deep Space II similar to the Project Mercury flights of the early 1960’s. Single-Occupant The test will also help to establish manned flight Launch - Reentry procedures, including communications, weather Crew Capsule monitoring, capsule recovery and telemetry systems.
