Dear Parishioners, Three of my siblings attended Bishop Ford High School in Brooklyn in the late seventies and early eighties. The high school was located adjacent to the Prospect Expressway in Windsor Terrace and was recognizable with the image of a pagoda “Ever Ancient…………Ever New” and a cross looming on the roof of the school entrance. Our Lady of the Snows R. C. Church Without a doubt all the students learned about Bishop Francis X. Ford and were inspired by his missionary zeal in China. Bishop Ford was born in Brooklyn and attended Cathedral College in Manhattan. He was the first seminarian for the Maryknoll Fathers in Ossining NY and was ordained in 1917. A year later he traveled with other American priests to China and began missionary work in helping to bring the Catholic Faith to China. Father Raymond Finch, the Superior General of Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, spoke of Ford as “an innovator. He helped the Catholic Church enter into the Chinese culture. The churches he built were in Chinese styles, not Western, which was unusual for the time. He was trying to help the Church be as Chinese as possible.” On September 21, 1935 Father Ford was consecrated a bishop and for the next twenty years Bishop Ford increased the number of faithful from 9,000 to 20,000 in his diocese of Kaying and built many schools, hostels and churches. Eventually Bishop Ford was brought up on false charges of espionage and placed in a Communist Chinese prison camp where he was tortured and died on February 21, 1952. Bishop Ford became the first American Roman Catholic bishop and fourth American civilian to die in a Communist Chinese prison camp. He is considered a martyr and in observance of his 100th Anniversary as a priest, a cause for canonization opened this past year in December 2017. The Diocese of Brooklyn has introduced the canonization process and our own Bishop Raymond Chappetto in the Vicar General’s Office is spearheading the effort. On the tables in the Gathering Space are prayer cards for the Canonization of Servant of God, Bishop Francis Xavier Ford. Please take home the prayer card and pray for his canonization. Also, membership into the Bishop Francis Xavier Ford Guild is possible to help keep alive the inspiring memory of Bishop Ford and offer prayer, support and financial assistance to the cause for beatification and canonization. Membership forms are in the Gathering Space. May our prayers and support lead to the elevation of this Maryknoll missionary and Church martyr, originally from Brooklyn, Bishop Francis Xavier Ford, as saint of God.
