Is there an “adult culture”? However, today we will take a look at some common shared interests of high school students, regionally & nationally. What were your favorite ways to spend your free time? 2. What were your favorite TV shows that were on during high school? 3. Who were your favorite bands/singers? 4. What/who were your favorite books/authors? 5. What were some of the myths that adults had about teenagers when you were in high school? 6. How were teenagers portrayed in the media at that time? (Positive and/or negative) 4 8/9/19 Social Time Values In 2017 & 2019 TI surveys, 21% and 38% of NH HS students surveyed preferred physical activity (organized sports, hiking, etc.) in their free time. Approx. 57% of all high school students in the U.S. play at least 1 sport. 5 8/9/19 In 2017 & 2019 TI surveys, 32% & 50% preferred to engage in artistic activities in their free time. In the U.S., 37% of high school students participate in school performing arts programs, and 41% indicate frequently attending arts events. In 2015 & 2017 TI surveys, only 5% of NH HS students surveyed preferred to use or be around substances in their free time. Frequently mentioned shows include: • Animated shows, e.g. The Dragon Prince • Sci-fi and/or supernatural shows, e.g. Supernatural • Fantasy shows e.g. Games of Thrones Video link Music • NH HS students in the 2019 TI survey reported very divergent musical artists – there was no clear favorite. • Top 3 favorites spanned decades (Celine Dion to Ed Sheeran) and genres (Jason Aldean to Ben Platt) • Responses included 3 of the artists listed on Billboard’s Top 10 Artists in May 2019 1.
