Fountains of Wayne make the kind of happy, poppy music that you rarely hear these days. 1bey first came on the scene about two years with the minor hit single ''Radiation Vibell from their self-titled album. 1ben, their co-songwriter and bassist Adam Schlesinger wrote and sang the tit1e song from the Tom Hanks' movie That Thing You Do. Now, FoW is back with a great new album tit1ed Utopia Parkway. Utopia Parkway is overflowing with pop melodies reminiscent of 'ro' s groups like the Beach Boys, the Monkees, and the Beatles. There are wonderful harmonies, catchy choruses, and hand claps all over the album. You can't help but like their songs. Some are mid-tempo, acoustic guitar and piano songs while other are electric guitar heavy new wave power-pop. ''Prom 1beme" is based around a big piano and strings arrangement, but singer and co-songwriter Chris Collingwood sings the poignant lyrics about the last days of high school in a low key way that makes it completely believable. Fountains of Wayne mix nice-guy love songs with all sorts of clever, pop-cuittire ref erences. In ''Red Dragon Tattoo," after the narrator gets a tattoo to impress his girlfriend, he says, "Now I look a little more like that guy from KoRn." "Laser Show" is a great, early Beatles style rock song about simply going to see a laser soow at a planetarium. 1be first single, "Denise", is incredibly catchy with its "sha-Ia-Ja" and "011, do ya? Do ya?" backing vocals. Most of the songs tai<e place in a sub urban, summery world of ma11s, vans, and the Jersey soore.
