Dela Cruz Hawaii Catholic Herald etting to the town of Kaupo is a pilgrim- age of faith. This quaint Maui locale on the east- ern lip of the island could quite literally be described as “caught between a rock Gand a hard place.” To the north, Kaupo is bordered by the mountainous slopes of Haleakala, the Valley Isle’s world-famous volcanic crater. To the south are craggy cliffs that descend breathtakingly — and sometimes scarily — thousands of feet into the Pacific Ocean. Very few families live in Kaupo. Cows graze in wide- open pastures there. The most “bustling” gathering spot is a small, colorful general store that sells food and goods to the sporadic visitor traversing the area. But despite Kaupo’s off-the-beaten-path spot, nothing —not wind, not rain, nor the 19-mile drive on the treacherous, winding road beyond the already- distant town of Hana — could keep a few hundred faithful from converging on its humble church of St. Joseph on July 29. (Continued on page 10) St. Joseph Church in Kaupo honors its patron with a statue placed high up in a niche in the church’s facade. Hundreds of people gathered at the Maui church to celebrate its 150th anniversary, July 29.
