On June 16, 1883, the Soldiers' Monument was dedicated by the Town of Swamp- scott "In memory of the brave and heroic soldiers who died In defense of their country." The town's first war memorial lists the names of the 14 men who died In the Civil War. The land on which the monument stands was given by the Mudge Family In memory of Charles Redlngton Mudge, killed at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. The town appropriated $3,000 for the monument and, even then, had a cost overrun of $16.95. A large procession wound Its way through the town culminating with ceremonies at the monument. It was dedicated with the prayer "that this war would be the last" but its shadow now touches more recent war memorials on the mall. The cover photograph was taken in 1910.
