Summer 2019 Edition

August 2019 Session 2 Quad Sports Sizzle! Mike B and campers heat up summer camp with super sports. Story by Camp Staff from Summer 2019 1 Sports in the Quad area of the campus is one of the centerpieces of Camp College, literally. The classes (that range from Flag Football to Beach Sports to Soccer) have been run by a variety of teachers and counselors over the summers, but one mainstay has been the legendary Mike Belfiore. With the skill, talent and creativity you would expect from a PE teacher, Mike makes summer classes outside fun to be in. Summer is all about being outside, getting sweaty, and getting exercise! Mike and brothers James and Lorenzo provide a time and place for campers to experience the fun of playground games. Shady, then sunny as the day goes on, the quad offers a break from cell phones, game devices and summer math packets. One long time camper describes Mike’s classes as creating “Fond, entertaining memories and a time where everyone could feel included!” It seems as though any camper, experienced in athletics or not, can enjoy the Quad classes. In closing, this dynamic set of classes is one you’ll want to sign up for next summer! Ask your friends which classes they enjoyed best. And don’t forget, bring a water bottle. THIS SUMMER’S TOP STORIES Crazy for Kooky Science story by Camp ‘zine Staff Joseph Violi is clearly having a lot of fun in this class. It looks like he is making some type of slime - and a mess! Miss Emily is the teacher for this class and we’re surprised she can handle all these noisy kids! But she does, and boy do they love the class! From science to silly, this class is a blast. 2 Meet the Staff. Session 2: August 2019 Mr. Epps: Chief Editor Katie and Maddie (CIT) and Erin (CIT) helped out - a lot! Marc took the rocket photo near the end of the paper. Newspaper Staff: Neel Das Ava Flores Madeline Hester Jake LaRusso Jayla Little Gabi Louis Dylan McIntosh Riley Reid Maggie Riley Layla Tafesse Angelina Violi Thanks to the teachers, counselors, office staff, CITers, parents and campers who make the summer go! Email us at [email protected]. Camp Class: Advanced Balloon Twisting Reported on by Selin Yilmaz Advanced Balloon Twisting is a class that you can take after you take Beginner Balloon Twisting. While Beginner Balloon Twisting is mostly focused on learning how to twist basic things (such as dogs and swords), Advanced Balloon Twisting focuses on how to correctly use proportions, like how to make a dog with a reasonable size for its head, body, and tail, instead of making a dog with a large head and unreasonably large tail, like you might as a beginner. Advanced Balloon Twisting is also a good class to take once you’ve gotten used to the sound of balloons popping. Starting off as a beginner, you likely will not be used to hearing balloons pop, but by the time you’re in Advanced Balloon Twisting, it probably won’t bother you. Balloon twisting is a great skill to learn, and I definitely recommend joining the beginner class so you can move up to the advanced one! 3 Camp Class Review Dylan McIntosh: Minecraft Mania! In this long running creative class, you will be able to play on a dedicated server. This server was created this summer by Catherine Epps, Nicholas Epps and Elena K for just this class; meaning only other kids in the class can play. Each week, a different contest is held. In the first week, we had a contest to see who could build the best house. So far, it’s been super fun. Next week, PvP! Choose this class if you want to play Minecraft and meet new friends in the process! Book Review: Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone Reviewed by Angelina Violi Recently, I read Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K Rowling. J.K Rowling currently lives in Scotland with her husband and her 3 children. She has written over 25 books, but as most people under 40 know, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone was her first book published. The main character's name is Harry Potter and Harry hates his life on Privet Drive with his aunt, uncle, and cousin. Harry has been told all his life that his parents died in a car accident and he was not to bring up the subject. So when a half-giant called Hagrid shows up at his door with a letter that tells him he is a wizard who has been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he can hardly believe it. Then Harry goes off to Hogwarts and makes friends, but has to face the evil Lord Voldemort. J.K Rowling wrote the book for people's enjoyment. The only similarity between J.K Rowling’s life and the book was that it takes place in Britain. J.K. Rowling first had the idea for Harry Potter while delayed on a train travelling from Manchester to London King's Cross in 1990. One weekend after flat hunting, she took the train back to London on her own, and the idea for Harry Potter fell into her head. She didn’t have a pen and was too shy to ask anyone for one on the train. It gave her the full four hours on the train to think up all the ideas for the book. Over the next five years, she began to plan out the seven books of the series. I thought that the book was incredibly interesting and had a lot of thought put into it. I would not change a thing about this book. Harry Potter has taught me about personalities - Harry Potter never lets me down. I would recommend this book to people from the ages of 11 and 16. Do not read this book if you are worried about your parents, the world ending, or other things, because this book WILL give you nightmares. You must be mature enough to handle the occasional language and the scary actions in this book. But otherwise, read the book; you will not regret it. by Riley Reid Staff Writer Help the Earth nd Earth day isn’t just April 22 , it should be every day! Have you noticed all the trash on our Earth? We need to change this. Remember, you can help by cutting down on the waste you make and stay busy picking up trash around you. (see next page) 4 Another way to help protect the environment is carpooling. It cuts down on pollution by only having one car to drive instead of more cars driving at the same time - then we can save on gasoline. We might not have a healthy Earth soon if we keep polluting our only planet that we are able to live on. Yeah, it does sound scary, that’s why we need to change. Don’t be the person to just think others will do it for you. We all need to make that change and do our part on Earth. So if you see trash on the ground pick it up, and if you are going to the beach maybe bring a trash bag so you can pick up trash that might be on the sand or in the water. Let’s make a change! Class Review – Ultimate Frisbee – Neel Das Do you like outdoor sports? Then Ultimate Frisbee class is perfect for you. We play Ultimate in the quad. The way this works is, James or Lorenzo (Class teachers) pick 2 captains, and then the captains pick teams. The way you play Ultimate Frisbee is, someone on team 1 throws the Frisbee off, and the other team gets the Frisbee, and they throw it to each other and get themselves to the end-zone. A player gets 3 steps each when they have the Frisbee. If you drop the Frisbee, it’s the other team’s Frisbee. When you score, you repeat to throw it off and the other team is on offense now. This class is really fun, fast-paced and well-coached. I would recommend it to anyone who likes sports and sunshine. Remember to bring a water bottle! Have fun out there! That Good Lunch. by Gabi Louis Staff Writer My favorite part of lunch at camp is the food. There are cheesesteaks, fries, soda, gummies, and much more. Riley Reid says that the fries are potato-y goodness and that they are very soft. She also says that they come at a good price of $1.90 per box. Selin Yilmaz says that the chocolate chip cookies are her favorite snack to get at lunch because they are soft and big, so you can share with your friends and come at a great price of $1.75. Layla Tafesse says that the cherry Jolly Ranchers are her favorite part of lunch. She says that the Jolly ranchers are her favorite because of the flavor. She also loves the price of $0.10 per piece. Madeline Hester feels that the grilled cheese are her favorite part of lunch. She says that the sandwiches are cheesy and crunchy at the same time - and come at a great price of $3.45! Overall, lunch is super good and is one of my favorite parts of the day. 5 Interview with Mrs. Hurley conducted by Riley Reid Why do you love to work at Camp College? I love teaching kids! Which classes do you teach? Clever Letters, Jeopardy Fun, Writing + Illustrating, Rock Art, Virtual Vacation, and Summer Reading Challenge.
