This new multicultural project from Jordi Savall and his musicians on The Routes of Slavery (1444-1888) marks a world first in the history of music and of the three continents involved in the trade in African slaves and their exploitation in the New World, which are brought together through the early music of the colonial period, the musical traditions of Mali and the oral traditions of the descendants of slaves in Madagascar, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. This 'Musical Memoir' is accompanied with historical texts on slavery, beginning with the early chronicles of 1444 and concluding with texts written by the Nobel Peace Prize-winner Martin Luther King shortly before his assassination in 1968. Label: Alia Vox File Under: Classical/Secular Sponsored by UNESCO, this musical reconciliation is founded on equality, harmony and reciprocal inspiration, Vocal music constituting the commemoration of a tragic and shameful chapter in the history of mankind. Alongside the great operas that have survived from this period, the final madrigals methodically explore the multiple possibilities offered by the rapidly developing practice of basso continuo and by an unprecedented exploitation of solo voices. And, in that respect, the celebrated 'Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda' forms a spectacular finale to our Monteverdian adventure! Libro settimo (1619) 1Tempro la cetra, SWV 117. Monteverdi’s music attempts to marry text and harmony so closely that we are capable of seeing into the protagonists’ hearts, of feeling their state of emotion viscerally whilst hearing their words... I pay tribute to the wonderful singers and instrumentalist who have taken part in our five-year journey and thank them for all that they have taught me." True, she has taken part in complete operas on disc as on stage, and has recorded arias by other composers of the time such as Vivaldi, Leo, Porpora, Feo or Mancini (Arias for Domenico Gizzi and I Viaggi di Faustina being two recent albums). Invernizzi’s majestic sweep of Handelian queens - Cleopatra, Berenice, Arianna and Alcina, among them - takes us through a chequered period in the composer’s career, when he led the two Royal Academies of Music in the 1720s and 1730s. At this time, he was writing for magnificent and tempestuous divas such as Francesca Cuzzoni and Anna Maria Strada del Pò – a selection of their roles is to be heard on this new Glossa recording. These are choppy waters through which Roberta Invernizzi sails with unquestionable skill: in complete control of her native language and dominance of Handel’s stylistic demands all allied to her lustrous vocal tones. Sympathetic accompaniment is from Fabio Ciofini and his Accademia Hermans, which works extensively in the Perugian Teatro Cucinelli in Solomeo. In a co-production with the Fondazione Teatro di Pisa and the Händel Festspiele Halle, Ipata brings a further slant on Handel’s operatic career in London. Despite being busy with running the second Royal Academy of Music and writing his own operas, the composer was striving to present London audiences with selections from Italian operas by other composers, at the same time as giving his star singers the opportunity to show off early in the opera company’s season. One result was 'Catone' in 1732, with music by Leo, Hasse, Vivaldi, Vinci, Porpora as well as by Handel himself; company members included Senesino, Anna Maria Strada del Pò and Antonio Montagnana. For this Halle performance Carlo Ipata has brought together a modern-day starry cast: Sonia Prina, Roberta Invernizzi (see previous page for her own Handel opera arias release); Riccardo Novaro, Kristina Hammarstrom and Lucia Cirillo – Label: Glossa to sing the tale of the noble Roman Republican senator finding himself on the losing side of battles with Julius Caesar File Under: Classical/Opera & and with his daughter being in love with the conquering general. Angela Romagnoli provides a resounding defence of the Vocal Handelian pasticcio in her booklet essay. Catalogue No: GCD923511 The pasticcio’s plot functions admirably, the arias are stunning, both individually and collectively: the recording is a feast Barcode: 8424562235113 of sparkling, crowd-pleasing virtuosity. 2 FOR 1.5 Format: 2 CD Packaging: digipack Sonia Prina [Catone] Riccardo Novaro [Cesare] Roberta Invernizzi [Emilia] Kristina Hammarstrom [Arbace] Lucia Cirillo [Marzia] Auser Musici Carlo Ipata [conductor] RELEASE DATE 17TH FEBRUARY 2017 CORELLI: Violin Sonatas Op. 5 La Gioia Lina Tur Bonet Musica Alchemica All six of Corelli's published collections of instrumental music demonstrate his exceptional skill as a violinist and composer, but it was in his Violin Sonatas Op. 5 that
