Statistics of Cadet Colleges k-27 >o r O s CAD^T COLL^G^S OF An Introduction The rise of tilt w^a^c OoII^^^o in Bangladesh is, in fact, intimately associated with the struggle of her people for realisation of tneir legitimate share in the administration and defence. The first Cadet College known as 'iast Pakistan Cadet College • was opened at Faujdarhat, Chittagong in 195 8 which was subsequently (196k) renamed as Faujdarhat Cadet College. Consequent upon tne success and achievement at Faujdarhat three more Cadet Colleges were set up in 1964-65 at Jhenaidah, Momenshahi(now Mirzapur) and Rahshahi in the rest of the three divisions. The growth of the Cadet Colleges and their extra-ordinary achievement in residential educ^tior encouraged the education d-yartment to open a number of residential schools in different district head-quarters. By 197O» six Residential Model Schools were set up at Sylhet, Comilla, Barisal, Pabna,Rangour for boys and at MymensingBu for Girl • s.. The Cadet Colleges suffered heavy casualties in man and material auri^ liberation wax", ^fter liberation, a section of people being prompted by a strong sentiment of liberty demand ed the abolition of the- Cadet Colleges forthwith to establish equality in all spheres of life. At this critical juncture the prominent leaders of Administration as well as Defence came forward and projected tne urgent need of the Cadet Colleges in the task of reconstructing the waitorn country. The govern- ment that followed tno liberation decided to go ahead with these institutions till such time when a better alternative could be found out by which the goodness of the Cadet Colleges could be safeguarded and not sacrificed to a tiieorertical equality. Finding no other better alternative, the concept oT Cadet Colleges was finally accepted when the Jatiya Sangsad passed the Cadet College(Amendment) Act in August,1973. By this time, the Cadet Colleges almost come to their former shape offsetting the damage caused during the liberation war. By 1975* the demand for Cadet College places(seats) among the parents increased manifold ,The people then started pressing for more Cadet Colleges in the country. : 2 ; Meanwhile, the government residential model schools bast with multi-dimensional problems could not come up to achieve tbu, desired objectives as jzpociod of thorn. The govt . in r^sponsu to popular demand and with a view to establishing higher academics standard utnbarKod u..on a policy in May 1977 to convert all tin- state Residential i/io^el schools into Cadet Colleges. The «or.i. started immediately and thereby bylhet Cadet College and _<angvur Cadet College carne into being in 197<3. The opening of new Cadet College was a land :narlz in the educational history of the country In fact, as the conversion of an established institution into a Caaet College was technically a different job, it took sciiu ;r;orc /ears to tak. up the -work of conversion for the rest of the iaooj schools. However two cor^ Cadet Colleges namely,Barisal Cacj«_t College & Pabna Cadet College came into being in 1981. In 1532 K/i.'-nsingh Girl's iiodel ochool was converted into Girl's Cadet Coxlege and Comilla Residential School got converted into a Cac^t College in 1983. As enunciated in trie Cad^t College ordnance 1964, the Cad-. College shall exercise the following powers and perform the following duties, namely, a. to provide a so ;nc liberal public school educ^ O-LOI; , b. to provide ei^.:.:untary military training to Cadets, c. to provide instructions in such branches of learning as the College .,iay think fit, and, d. to do all such ocner acts or things, whether incidental to power aforesaid or not,as may De requisite in order to further trie objects of the College as a teaching institution and to cultivate and promote arts, science and other brancehes of learning. The qualified cadets from these colleges meet the growing demand of commissioned officers for the defence department. These 10 colleges are placed under the Ministry of Dcf.-ru- and is administered and supervised by an Army Adjutant General whose offices ar.e located at the Dhaka Cantonment, Dhaka. There are 255 teachers and 1249 ancilliary staff in these colleges,Total intake(from -VII to XIl)has been reported to be 29^ for the year 1984 and output as 448 in SSC & 292 in HSC for the year 1984, Needless to mention that the Boards of IntermediaL- •; Secondary Education (£>haKa/Chittagong/Ra jshahi/Jessore )hold SSC &.
