October will be here very quickly and we want to encourage everyone to make your reservations as soon as possible. "Beyond Borders: Imagination, Innovation, Inspiration" is this year's conference theme to be held at the Snow King Resort in Jackson, WY October 12 to 15, 2005. Located in beautiful northwestern Wyoming, the hotel offers many amenities, including close proximity to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Plus, the resort is providing special room rates for conference attendees. Book your reservations now by calling 1-800-522-KING. Please identify yourself as a WLA/MPLA conference attendee to ensure that you receive the special rate. The special room rate is also available for three days before and after the conference, based on availability at the time of booking. This provides a great opportunity to see some beautiful country, as well as attend a spectacular conference. Snow King's deadline for reserving rooms at the conference rate is September 12, 2005. After this date, individuals may still make reservations at the special room rate, based on availability. Snow King Resort will provide hotel guests with complementary transportation to and from the Jackson Hole Airport, located nine miles away, and complementary parking in the resort's parking lots. The local START bus offers a free shuttle around the town of Jackson and picks up at Snow King. In this newsletter, you will find event and program information thanks to the hard work of members, section chairs, and officers of both WLA and MPLA. Our goal has been to facilitate a co-operative conference as a team, which reflects the benefits of our twelve- state regional organization and our state organizations. There will also be, of course, fun! Jackson Hole is famous for more than its scenery - good restaurants and nightlife are found on every corner. The Teton County Library's Friends will also have helpful volunteers on site to assist you with information and directions throughout the conference. Mark your calendars and make your reservations. We will see you in October! Sincerely, Erin Kinney and Sharon Osenga Conference Co-Chairs MPLA Newsletter, August 2005 Page 3 President’s Letter Summer’s lease hath all too short a date ---William Shakespeare. This is usually the time of year when things really begin to gear up for MPLA. This year has been no exception. It has been busy Spring and Summer for MPLA committees, sections and officers, and the results are becoming evident. Take a look at the new MPLA web page, designed by our webmaster, Dan Chaney. I was impressed with how easy the page is to navigate and how much information there is about our organization. Check out the new calendar feature. Dan has devoted a great deal of time to make this site terrific. Please join me in thanking him. The Continuing Education Committee had another successful grant cycle. There’s an article by Dan Stanton, the chair of the committee, in this issue (see page 52). The grants are a wonderful opportunity to bring a continuing education opportunity for the MPLA membership through pre-conferences at the annual meetings of your state association. There’s help available to develop and hold a preconference if you need it. Just let me or Dan know. The Task Force on the Structure of MPLA will be reporting to the Executive Board at it’s July meeting. We will have more on this at our annual business meeting in October. I’d like to thank Lisa Mecklenberg Jackson for her work on the MPLA Newsletter for the past four years. She’ll be spending more time enjoying her twins, who many of us think of as just being born yesterday! Another thank you to Judy Zelenski who is temporarily stepping in as editor of the Newsletter. There is an ad for the new editor in this issue (see page 37). Another thanks to Kay Lowell, the state representative for Colorado is also stepping down. Hopefully by this time next year we’ll be offering Kay congratulations on finishing her Ph.D. At our conference in Jackson, Wyoming we’ll see the results of the hard work of the Awards Committee. Remember the nominations for the awards come from the membership. So start thinking now of people you Speaking of the conference, the conference committee has planned another wonderful conference that will be richly varied in content and scope. At every MPLA One Conference, One Book conference I meet new colleagues and renew old friendships.
