2017 International Women’s Football Leagues Addendum Maritime Women’s Football League (MWFL) – 2017 Season After four straight MWFL championships, the Saint John Storm were heavy favorites to claim supremacy in Eastern Canada again in 2017. But the Storm were upset in a regular season contest by the Capital Area Lady Gladiators and suffered their first defeat since the 2013 MWFL championship game. That didn’t quell the Storm for long, however, as they bounced back in the playoffs to capture their fifth consecutive MWFL championship over the Gladiators. They split their two regular season meetings, setting up a playoff showdown between the Riot and the five-time league champion Valkyries. The Regina Riot knocked off Saskatoon for the Prairie Conference championship and then dominated the Calgary Rage in the WWCFL title game to win their second league championship in the last three years.
