List of men aged 16 or above in Aberdeen, 1759 The list of all men aged sixteen and above within the burgh of Aberdeen was compiled between 27 and 29 August 1759 as part of the preparations for the defence of the town against an invasion by the French. On 3 August 1759, the Council noted that the town was "defenceless ... for want of cannon, small arms and soldiers", and resolved to arm the Block House (Council Register, Volume 62, folio 258 verso); William Kennedy records that, in addition, a force of 500 defence volunteers was enrolled (Annals of Aberdeen, London, 1818, Volume 1, page 318). Twenty-seven sections of the list survive in the City Archives (1 – 24 and 28 - 30). • Sections 1 -2, 28-30: Footdee Quarter • Sections 3 – 8: Green Quarter • Sections 9 – 17: Crooked Quarter • Sections 18-24: Even Quarter At least three sections of the list are missing; two for areas in the Footdee Quarter, and one for an area in the Green Quarter. In addition there are two documents which name a total of 502 men already recorded in the main list; these two documents probably form the roll of the volunteer force mentioned by Kennedy. Finally, there is one document which records officers, sergeants and old soldiers. Only the twenty-seven sections of the main list, comprising all men aged sixteen and above, have been transcribed here. Each section of the list was compiled by the constable of the precinct, hence information is not consistently recorded across the twenty-seven documents. All sections given the name of each man in the precinct, many also provide details of his occupation; occasionally, his age or an indication of his place of residence is also given. Spellings of forenames and occupations have been modernised, but spellings of surnames have been left unaltered. Horizontal divisions appear in some sections of the list: these have been reproduced on this computer list, though their meaning is not entirely clear. Some compilers have used the line to denote a household, other lines seem to indicate a tenement or topographical area. Following compilation, the sections were annotated by the addition of "good” after certain names. The "good" men may be those fit for military service, but only a small proportion of these are included in the lists of volunteers. The addition of an asterisk next to a name indicates that that man is noted again in the list of volunteers: these two lists should be consulted for those names marked, as they may furnish details of occupation or confirm an alternative surname spelling. SECTION 1: First two precincts of the Footdee Quarter This section of the list details the men in the first two precincts of the Footdee Quarter. It was compiled by Robert Mackie and David Leask, and provides the name and occupation of each man in the precincts. An asterisk next to the name indicates that that man is noted again in the list of volunteers (Footdee Quarter numbers 1 - 4, 7 - 20 and 22 - 27): this document should be consulted for those names marked, as they may furnish details of occupation or confirm an alternative surname spelling.
