Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings), making all games worth three points. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. UpComiNg gameS NCHC FaCts aNd Figures Friday, Oct. 6 • After NCHC teams went 5-1 in exhibition play last weekend, six NCHC Colorado College at Vermont, 7:05 p.m. ET teams open the 2017-18 regular season this weekend while Omaha Ferris State at No. 20 Western Michigan, 7:05 p.m. ET hosts its exhibition opener. Highlighting the weekend is the Ice Breaker No. 5/11 Providence at Miami, 7:35 p.m. ET Tournament, which is hosted by Minnesota Duluth. The 12th-ranked Nipissing at Omaha, 7:07 p.m. CT (exhibition) Bulldogs face in-state rival Minnesota Friday, with Michigan Tech of the ^No. 3/3 Minnesota at No. 12/6 Minnesota Duluth, 7:37 p.m. CT WCHA and Union of ECAC Hockey also taking part. This is the second straight season an NCHC school has hosted the Ice Breaker Tournament No. 7/7 North Dakota at Alaska Anchorage, 7:07 p.m. AT after Denver held the 2016 event at Magness Arena. North Dakota won the Ice Breaker in 2015 in Portland, Maine, while UMD also participated in Saturday, Oct. 7 the 2014 Ice Breaker Tournament hosted by Notre Dame. Colorado College at Vermont, 7:05 p.m. ET • NCHC teams have combined to post the best non-conference record No. 20 Western Michigan at Ferris State, 7:07 p.m. ET among the six Division I men’s hockey conferences each of the last three No. 5/11 Providence at Miami, 8:00 p.m. ET seasons, including compiling a 48-21-14 regular-season non-conference No. 6/9 St. Cloud State at No. 15/18 Minnesota State, 7:07 p.m. CT record in 2016-17 for a .663 winning percentage. Defending national champion Denver is No. 1 in both LaSt Week’S ResultS polls, including unanimously in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. St. Cloud State and North Dakota are in the top 10 in both polls with Saturday, Sept. 30 Minnesota Duluth No. 12 in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll. (page 9) No. 20 Western Michigan 8, Wilfrid Laurier 2 (exh.) • Three NCHC players are tied, along with Quinnipiac’s Landon Smith, for %Colorado College 4, Lethbridge 1 (exh.) the most games played among active NCAA players. Minnesota Duluth No. 7/7 North Dakota 6, Manitoba 2 (exh.) forward Karson Kuhlman, Denver defenseman Adam Plant and North No. 6/9 St. Cloud State 8, Regina 0 (exh.) Dakota forward Austin Poganski, all seniors, have each played in 122 Alberta 4, No. 11/6 Minnesota Duluth 3 (exh.) career games. Kuhlman has never missed a game, tying him with Smith for the most consecutive games played among active players. Sunday, Oct. 1 • Colorado College is the only team in the NCAA this season with no No. 1/1 Denver 3, Lethbridge 1 (exh.) seniors on its roster. Only Boston College, with one, has fewer than % Game in Breckenridge, Colo. two seniors on its roster besides CC. The Tigers have 19 freshmen and sophomores, the third-most underclassmen in the country, tied with Upcoming Games on NCHC.tv Miami. On the flip side, Omaha has only three freshmen on the team Friday, Oct. 6 this year, the fewest in the NCAA. The Mavericks feature 16 juniors and Ferris State at No. 20 Western Michigan, 7:05 p.m. ET seniors, the most upperclassmen in the NCHC and tying for the third-most No. 5/11 Providence at Miami, 7:35 p.m. ET upperclassmen in all of NCAA men’s hockey. Nipissing at Omaha, 7:07 p.m. CT (exhibition) • After no new head coaches last season, the NCHC has one new head No. 3/3 Minnesota at No. 12/6 Minnesota Duluth, 7:37 p.m. CT coach this year -- Omaha’s Mike Gabinet, who replaced Dean Blais. Gabinet is the youngest head coach in men’s Division I hockey. Gabinet Saturday, Oct. 7 was an associate head coach for Omaha last season and is the first No. 5/11 Providence at Miami, 8:00 p.m. ET alumnus to serve as head coach of the Mavericks, having played at Omaha Michigan Tech/No. 16 Union at No. 12/6 Minnesota Duluth, 7:37 p.m. CT from 2000-04.
