GENERAL (Table 1.1-1.12) 1.1 Introduction Nagaland, the Sixteenth State of the Indian Union, was inaugurated on the 1st December 1963. Physical feature The State of Nagaland lies between 2506' and 2704' latitude North of Equator and between 93020' and 95015' East of longitudinal lines, covering an area of 16579sq.km. The State is bounded by Assam in the North and West, by Myanmar and Arunachal Pradesh in the East and Manipur in the South and runs parallel to the bank of Brahmaputra. The topography is very severe, full of hills ranges. The altitude varies between 194metres and 3048metres above sea level. Many villages and towns stand at 1000 to 2000 metres high as it is a hilly state. The Nagas build their houses on top of the hills and at higher elevations because of security reason in the earlier days. The highest peak in the state is Mt. Saramati, measuring 3840metres above the sea level. Other important mountains are Japfu and Pauna. Mt. Japfu is in Kohima district and Mt. Pauna is in Peren district. Their heights are 3014 and 2841 metres respectively. Nagaland is a hilly state. The plain area is limited only to Dimapur, Jalukie and adjoining area with Assam. The people The people are called “Nagas”. The nomenclature “Naga” has been in used for many generations, even before they migrated to their present habitation. The scholars have been trying hard to dig out the root meaning of the word “Naga” in recent times. There are several theories on the origin and the meaning of the word “Naga”. However, it is yet to be agreed upon to a particular theory. It appears that the Nagas did not called themselves by the name Naga and they did not have a common name for the whole community till the American missionaries and Britishers came to their land. Later on, they accepted the name “Naga” as their own and they loved to be and proud to be called Nagas. They belong to the Mongolian race. According to the 2001 census, the population of Nagaland is 1988636(P). Out of this,82.26% of the population is in rural. The density of population is 120per sq.km. The Nagas are tribal. There are several tribes and sub-tribes among them. They have their own distinctive dialects and cultures. The major tribes of Nagaland are Angami, Ao, Chakhesang, Chang, Khiamnungan, Konyak, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sangtam, Sema, Yimchunger, Zeliang, etc. Livelihood pattern Agriculture is the most important activity of the people. Nagas practice chiefly jhum cultivation. However they have started terrace cultivation, comparatively in recent times and the State Government is encouraging them to start terrace cultivation in many ways. Among the Naga tribes, Angami, Chakhesang and Zeliang practice terraced cultivation on large scale. Besides agriculture, people engage themselves in weaving, blacksmith and other handicrafts to meet their daily requirements during off- season. 1.2 GOVERNMENT OF NAGALAND Shri.
