Their nickname The Freds, short for The Alfredians from the name of their ground Alfredian Park, reveals a link between Wantage and Winchester. King Alfred was born in Wantage and died in Winchester. He is probably buried at Hyde Church, less than half a mile of this ground. Wantage are having a tough season, not helped by Tuesday night’s result at home, when they went down by four goals to nil against North Leigh. This result also saw North Leigh leapfrog the Citizens on goal difference putting Winchester back into ninth place in the league. Our next game is also away to North Leigh, followed by tough matches against Mangotsfield and Evesham. Please note that our away match against Salisbury next Tuesday has been postponed as Salisbury are playing in the League Cup. Non League football is enjoying some excellent publicity through the exploits of Lincoln and Sutton in the FA Cup. Arsenal at home, what a dream tie for Sutton, managed by Paul Doswell who lives locally. Off the pitch, we apologise for the closure of the Dugout Cafe, which has suffered a collapse of part of the roof. If anyone knows of a flat roof contractor locally, who might be able to help, please let me know! Kind Regards Paul Murray Chairman. 4 21 OUR SPONSORS City's Cup Honours List City's League Honours List F.A. Bob Paisley (1919 –1996), Manager of Liverpool F.C. 66 6 19 6 Malcolm's Welcome We welcome Wantage to Winchester for today’s game. Both Wantage and Winchester have a link to King Alfred and both have a statue erected of him, and there is now an annual cycle ride (now in its 9th year) from Wantage (the King’s birthplace) to his final resting place (Winchester). Wantage play at Alfredian Park. Earlier in the season we won 1-0 at Wantage with Craig Feeney scoring the all important goal in the 63rd minute. In last season’s corresponding match we won 3-0 in a game in which Wantage played 70 minutes with only 10 men, with Charlie Smeeton, Warren Bentley and a deflected Leigh Mills shot providing the goals. Winchester also won 3-0 at Wantage last season, with Jamie Barron scoring twice and Warren Bentley once. Prior to this I do not believe the clubs had previously met as Wantage only joined the Southern League in the 2014/15 season having been promoted after 58 consecutive seasons in the Hellenic League, a league that their reserves joined at the start of the season the first team began life in the Southern League.
