The 2009 men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour started in April at Brasília and will conclude at the end of October in Sanya, China. The US$380,000 The Hague Open Beach Volleyball 2009 is the 11th of 12 double gender events to be staged on the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour. For more information regarding the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, please visit www.fivb.org. · After hosting the youth world championships for players under the age of 19, The Netherlands will host its first SWATCH FIVB World Tour event for the world's elite Beach Volleyball performers at The Hague. Teams from Estonia and Germany won the FIVB youth titles after The Hague completed a three-season run of staging European Tour events, including the 2006 continental championships. The Hague, the third-largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam and Rotterdam with a population of nearly 500,000, is the largest Dutch city on the North Sea and comprises two distinct beach towns. The main beach resort Scheveningen, in the northwestern part of the city, is a popular destination for tourists and young people with 10 million visitors a year. The Hague Open Beach Volleyball 2009 for women starts August 24 and concludes August 29 at the Hommerson Beach Stadion on Scheveningen. The winning team will share the $30,000 first-place prize. Men’s semi-finals & medal matches A total of 63 men’s teams from 25 countries have competed or will be competing in the PAF Open (as of August 26, 2009), including, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Georgia, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Ukraine and Venezuela. · The Hague Open Beach Volleyball 2009 will be the 242nd men’s event on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour (open, grand slam, Olympic and Goodwill). The first men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour event was played February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. · The Hague Open Beach Volleyball 2009 concludes the string of SWATCH FIVB World Tour double gender events in Europe that started with the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships at the end of June and continued with events in Switzerland, Russia, France, Austria, Poland, Norway and last week in Finland. · The 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour features $7.2-million in prize money and continues through the end of October for the men’s with a double-gender stop in Sanya, China. After the Sanya stop, the women’sseason finale is the first week of November in Phuket, Thailand.
