The disruption of education will now have lasting effects on children and young people and future generations. The loss of jobs and government efforts channelled to contain the community spread of COVID-19 also means that young people without work experience will have greater difficulty in finding employment. At the same time, young people have shown a keen interest for media programmes that offer an insight into technology and innovation that can help them to become entrepreneurs. The policy shift towards Land Degradation Neutrality offers young people a new opportunity to jumpstart their own careers that are aligned with the green future they desire. To overcome the real and practical obstacles such as financing, experience and personal and external barriers hindering the youth’s ability to take action, the UNCCD and Deutsche Welle will conduct joint webinars targeting young people to encourage them to create sustainable enterprises and employment in the land sector. Three webinars will focus on building the necessary capacity and motivating young people for each of the developing country regions to venture into land-related entrepreneurial initiatives. The fourth webinar, to be held during International Youth Day on 12 August 2021, will disseminate this knowledge through an event where the most innovative young people will be given a platform to showcase their land-based enterprises and engage with senior policymakers, business leaders and investors in small and medium scale businesses. UNCCD The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is an international agreement on good land stewardship. It helps people, communities and countries create wealth, grow economies and secure enough food, clean water and energy by ensuring land users an enabling environment for sustainable land management. Through partnerships, the Convention’s 197 parties set up robust systems to manage drought promptly and effectively. Good land stewardship based on sound policy and science helps integrate and accelerate achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, builds resilience to climate change and prevents biodiversity loss. DEUTSCHE WELLE Deutsche Welle (DW) is Germany’s international broadcaster and one of the most successful and relevant international media outlets. Their multimedia content in 30 languages reaches more than one billion people worldwide each month. Their programme offerings convey Germany as a liberal democracy rooted in European culture, providing a forum for German (and other) points of view on important topics, with the aim of promoting understanding and the exchange of ideas among different cultures and peoples.
