A CONSOLIDATED HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 230 SCHOOL THOUGHT MEANING ACTION CARL SANDBURG HIGH SCHOOL 2019-2020 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Greetings Eagle Families and Friends, School Calendar On behalf of everyone here at Sandburg, Happy New Year to all! I hope you enjoyed the holiday Dates to Remember season and time with family and friends. The winter break provided me time to reflect on 2019! January Simply stated...2019 was an ELITE year at Carl Sandburg High School! 7 Classes Reconvene When I reflect back on my first year and a half serving as Principal of Carl Sandburg High School, 8 Mid-Year Graduation I am most proud of the many relationships that I have developed with students, staff, families, and community members. I have said it time and time again..Sandburg is special because of the people! 20 Martin Luther King Day No School I loved every moment of 2019 that I had the opportunity to spend supporting our students and staff as they pursued their passions in academics, athletics, activities, and service! The culture and climate at Sandburg is so special - I love Sandburg and it truly is an ELITE place. February The collective work of the staff at Sandburg is amazing! I am so proud of and grateful for our 17 President’s Day - No School dedicated staff who make connections with our students and develop lasting relationships as 25 Senior Honors Night, 7:00 PM they strive for innovation and engage our students both inside and outside of the classroom. Of particular note is Judy McAuliffe who has recently been recognized by the Illinois State Board of March Education as a Those Who Excel Teacher of Merit. Judy McAuliffe is an outstanding teacher, coach, and person and we are so proud of her for receiving this special recognition! 2 No School 3 Parent/Teacher Conferences One of the most exciting recognitions that our school community has earned in 2019 is being (no student attendance), named an Exemplary School. The designation is based on our school’s overall data for all of the 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM accountability indicators, as well as the data for individual student groups. The exemplary rating 5 Band Concert, 7:00 PM, PAC means that Carl Sandburg High School is in the top 10% of all schools in the state of Illinois - an elite 20 Early Dismissal, 1:00 PM accomplishment that is the result of having amazing students, outstanding staff, and supportive families! In 2019, we also appeared on Newsweek’s list of Top STEM High Schools! Our success has 22-27 Spring Break once again been recognized by the Washington Post (“Most Challenging Schools;”) Newsweek 30 Classes Reconvene (Distinguished School;) and Niche.com (Top 20 in Illinois). Embedded in these recognitions are specific successes highlighted below related to the two focus areas of our school improvement that are framed by a collective mindset to be Elite Daily! College and Career Readiness • 2 National Merit Semi-Finalists • 12 National Merit Commended • 108 Illinois State Scholars • 50% of students are enrolled in at least one AP course • 998 students completed 1736 AP exams • 365 students earned AP Scholar status for passing at least three exams with test scores of three or higher • 17 students earned National AP Scholar distinction for passing at least eight exams with an average score of four or higher Mr. Anthony J.
