NFS Form 10-900-a OMB Approval No. 1024-0018 (8-86) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET Section number 7 Page 1 AMERICAN BEACH HISTORIC DISTRICT, AMERICAN BEACH, NASSAU CO., FLORIDA SUMMARY The historic architectural resources of the American Beach Historic District are identified as being of significance from 1935, when American Beach was established as a resort community by the Pension Bureau of the Afro-American Insurance Agency of Jacksonville, Florida, through 1965, the first year following the passage of the Civil Rights Act. The end of state mandated segregation of public and private facilities led to the decline of American Beach as patrons were free to go elsewhere for recreation. The buildings constructed by 1965 were determined by the use of the Nassau County Property Appraiser's records or through oral sources. The resources are predominately single-family homes, of which 71 contribute to the historic district. The great majority of these are vacation homes that exhibit no formal architectural
