Surrounded by open countryside the area offers numerous opportunities for walking, cycling and country pursuits and yet it is only 11 miles from York with its vibrant restaurants, theatres, museums, galleries and shops. The village has a population of just over 100 and supports a bustling post office and general store, a pottery and the Memorial Institute, which acts as a community hall. To the side of the village green can be found the Grade I listed church of St Andrew’s, just a short walk from the school. The school has close links with the church, attending and participating in major celebrations such as Harvest Festival and Christmas. These occasions provide a wonderful opportunity for the children, families and local community to come together. Our | | local vicar has recently retired and we look forward to welcoming and working with his successor. The area is also only a short drive from the magnificent Yorkshire St Andrew’s Church, Bugthorpe coast and the Howardian Hills, which have been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Children attending the school live in the surrounding villages of Skirpenbeck, Full Sutton, Kirby Underdale and outlying farms. With just under 600 residents, the village is friendly and welcoming. The countryside around Sutton is mainly arable, however on our doorstep is the Lower Derwent National Nature Reserve, River Derwent and woodlands, most of which are readily accessible by a network of public footpaths. Halfway down the village, set back up a lane away from the main road is a small play area with equipment and space to kick a ball, The parish council is currently looking for funding to improve this facility for the village children. We have a thriving village hall which hosts events throughout the year. There are a number of local groups who use the award winning facility on a weekly or monthly basis including pre-school music group, indoor bowls, badminton and church drop in coffee mornings. Our school makes the most S of the facilities using the hall for indoor PE, productions and parties. Outside the hall are grass and all weather tennis courts. Pupils have regular tennis coaching, making use of the courts when needed. Situated within the foyer of the hall is the local post office. St Michael’s and All Angels Church is peacefully set at the northern end of the village where regular Sunday services are held along with the church fête. Our vicar, Ian Kitchen, says: “Our Church enjoys its close links with the school. A colleague and I lead collective worship weekly, hosting it in church once a month, and the children also attend services at the church at major festivals such as Easter and Christmas. I also spend time with the children on an ad hoc basis. Harvest The Church has given practical and financial help to school projects in the past few years. I am looking forward to meeting and working with the new head teacher and I hope he or she will be as warmly associated with our Church as past Crib Service BUGTHORPE AND SUTTON UPON DERWENT C OF E AND PRIMARYUPON SUTTON BUGTHORPE OF SCHOOL DERWENT C incumbents have been.” 5 OUR DIOCESE York Diocesan Board of Education supports 127 Church of England schools and academies in the area from the Humber to the Tees.
