About the Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT Shravanabelagola is a town located near Channarayapatna of Hassan district in the Indian state of Karnataka and is 144 km from Bangalore. The Gommateshwara Bahubali statue at Shravanabelagola is one of the most important tirthas (pilgrimage destinations) in Jainism. The Mahamastakabhisheka (Grand Consecration/The Great Indian Festival), refers to the abhiṣheka(anointment) of the Gommateshwara Statue located at Shravanabelagola is an important Jain festival held once in every 12 years. Last Mahamastabhisheka was in Feb 2018. A huge number of people visit this event from all walks of life. In order to ensure that the sewage generated during event does not get dumped into the nearby pond, the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board along with the local municipality devided to install a STP of 1.5 MLD capacity. The treated water from this STP would then be disposed to the nearby pond. This was one of the first largest packaged plant and first of its kind for the KUWS&DB. The packages STP from Oasis Renewables was chosen because of the following reasons: 1.The modular nature of the STP - It has 3 X 500 KLD batteries which allows the STP to be operated based on the incoming flow of sewage (visitors for Mahamastakabhisheka) 2.Faster delivery, installation and erection of the STP given the timeline for the event. The entire STP was manufactured, delivered, installed, erected and comissioned within 12 weeks of time. 2. Faster delivery, installation and erection of the STP given the timeline for the event. The entire STP was manufactured, delivered, installed, erected and comissioned within 12 weeks of time. The plant treated almost 1.5 MLD of sewage on a daily basis during the Mahamastakabhishek. However after the event, the volume of incoming sewage has reduced and based on the incoming sewage either one or two batteries are operated on a daily basis (500 KLD to 1 MLD capacity). One battery therefore serves as a standby capacity. Some of the salient features of this plant are: 1.There are 03 independent batteries of 500 KLD capacity each which can therefore function as independent STP each. This gives the flexibility of operating the STP at required capacity only. 2.There is a huge saving on electricity since the plant can be operated based on incoming sewage volume. So there is no need to operate the plant on design capacity and load. 3.The treated water meets the norms laid by KPSCB 4.The STP is automated which therefore needs minimum labour and manual intervention. 5.This STP continues to be an asset for all future events at Shravanbelagola. This plant now provides the treated water to the adjacent water pond where a lots of birds have returned to forage and nest. .
