These two outstanding soloists have developed an extensive repertoire for cello and piano. For some years now they have dedicated themselves above all to the music of their countrymen. The Netherlands Cello Sonata Foundation was established on their initiative and in cooperation with MDG is now releasing this new CD series consisting almost entirely of premiere recordings. Röntgen’s Special Vision The Discovery of the Dutch Cello Sonata Vol. 2 “The literature is meager, and I have long been looking for a fine work for this instrument.“ The publisher Abraham Noske wrote these words to Julius Röntgen, and shortly thereafter the Cello Sonata in A minor op. 41 was printed. Born in Leipzig, Röntgen soon received instruction from Moritz Hauptmann, Carl Reinecke, Louis Pladier, and Franz Lachner. In Amsterdam he became the cofounder and director of the conservatory. Röntgen and Pablo Casals were bound by close friendship and mutual admiration, and the former would dedicate a total of three sonatas to the latter, all of them in the Brahmsian stylistic orbit. The three short works by Daniel van Goens form a pretty encore. In view of the quality of these compositions, one can only welcome this joint initiative. Moreover, the audio result (on hybrid SACD!) of this series now containing two volumes is absolutely fascinating – so that an all-around endorsement complements this artistically outstanding production. The verdict of the press: “Solid reflection and technical brilliance stamp the playing of the duo” (ensemble) “With joy, sparkling temperament, and a broad expressive spectrum” (Aachener Zeitung) Distributed by: CODAEX, Larenstraat 58, B-3560 Lummen TEL: ++32-13-35 20 60• FAX: ++32-13-55 67 50 .
