Borecka Biographical Note Centralne Towarzystwo Opieki nad Sierotami, CENTOS (Associations for the Care of Orphans, CENTOS), was an organization for the care of Jewish orphans, established in Poland in 1924 as a federation of nine regional committees: 1.Congress Poland (Warsaw, Łódź, Lublin, Kielce); 2. Polesie (Pińsk); 3. Volhynia (Rovno); 4. Białystok; 5. The Committee of Yekopo for the regions of Vilna and Nowogrodek; 6. The city of Vilna; 7.Eastern Galicia (Lwów, Stanislav, Tarnopol); 8. Western Galicia (Cracow); 9. The city of Poznań. CENTOS, a veteran organization that had accumulated considerable experience in dealing with orphaned children during the period between the two wars, rapidly geared itself to coping with the orphanages during World War II. In the Warsaw ghetto the activities of CENTOS included managing kitchens and focal points for children as well as managing boarding houses and day houses. CENTOS also took care of refugees' children, arranged reading and playrooms for them, and organized half-day camps for children. CENTOS published two monthlies, Unzer Kind (in Yiddish) and Przegląd Społeczny (in Polish), which dealt with the theoretical and practical problems of child care and Jewish orphans.
