Sun Sets on RAF Leuchars

Sun sets on RAF Leuchars On Saturday 7th September 2013 RAF Leuchars saw its last time hosting the annual air show before its transformation into an army base. Leuchars has hosted the air show for many years but by 2015 it is set to be an army base. The air show started with a spectacular display from the BAC Strikemaster and the BAC Jet Provost. The air show started at 11:00am and finished at 5:30pm. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight donated the Avro Lancaster, the Supermarine Spitfire and the Hawker Hurricane. The Saab Viggen , Tunnan and 105 from Sweden were also flying. There was a wide range of static displays from the English Electric Lightning to the Cessna sea- plane. There was the sight of the familiar Red Arrows along with two of their predecessors, the red Gnats and one Hawker Hunter. Also flying were the Blades and the RV8tors, two homemade planes. The Wildcats Aerobatics Team also did a display with a Zivko and 2 Pitts S-2 biplanes. It was sadly a windy day so the RAF parachute team, the model aeroplanes and the Black Cats, the RNAS’s helicopter display team could not fly. The only airworthy Consolidated Catalina in the UK was also flying. The most popular aircraft at the air show was the Typhoon with a display team and two Austrian air force types flying. The air show ended with a flyover with the Lancaster, the Spitfire and the Hurricane followed by a flyover by the Panavia Tornado and the Lancaster, commemorating the anniversary of the Dambusters Raid. All in all it was an excellent day and really enjoyable. .
