POST CAPTAIN PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Patrick O'Brian | 528 pages | 07 Oct 1996 | HarperCollins Publishers | 9780006499169 | English | London, United Kingdom Post-captain - Wikipedia It was totally false; a pernicious doctrine; the thoughts flashed into being in a hundred simultaneous forms, with a thousand associations, and the speaking mind selected one, forming it grossly into the inadequate symbols of words, inadequate because common to disparate situations - admitted to be inadequate for vast regions of expression, since for them there were the parallel languages of music and painting. Words were not called for in many or indeed most forms of thought: Mozart certainly thought in terms of music. He himself at this moment was thinking in terms of scent. They are superior to men in this, that they have an unfeigned, objective, candid admiration for good looks in other women — a real pleasure in their beauty. All under sentence of death, often ignominious, frequently agonizing: and then the unspeakable levity with which the faint chance of happiness is thrown away for some jealousy, tiff, sullenness, private vanity, mistaken sense of honour, that deadly, weak and silly notion. Is the Doctor ready? Scratch-scratch, gasp-gasp. You might have written the Iliad in half the time, and a commentary upon it, too. I was afraid you had gone off to your stoats again. The carrier has brought you an ape. It had a can of ale at every pot- house on the road, and it is reeling drunk. It has been offering itself to Babbington. He believes it to be suffering from the furor uterinus, and we are to open it together when I return. Farther, farther; and now the wind was abaft her beam, and by rights her sternway should have stopped; but it did not; she was still travelling with remarkable speed in the wrong direction. He filled the topsails, gave her weather helm, and still she slid backwards in this insane contradiction of all known principles. For a moment all the certainties of his world quivered - he caught a dumbfounded, appalled glance from the master - and then with a sigh from the masts and stays, the strangest straining groan, the Polychrest's motion passed through a barely perceptible immobility to headway. She brought the wind right aft, then on to her larboard quarter; and hauling out the mizen and trimming all sharp, he set the course, dismissed the watch below, and walked into his cabin, relief flooding into him. Returning to England, he is restored to active service by the outbreak of war in While waiting for a command, Jack is offered a letter of marque by a Mr. Jack ultimately turns Canning down and later is given command of HMS Polychrest, an odd ship that was designed to launch a secret weapon. The ship is a poor sailing ship and his endeavours are made harder by a sadistic lieutenant. Placed under the command of Admiral Harte, with whose wife Jack had an affair in the previous book, Jack is given a free hand in the hope that his lucky streak of capturing prizes will continue. This mostly doesn't happen as Jack's most notable action is driving the privateer Bellone aground outside a Spanish port, while allowing several merchants to escape. Disappointing Admiral Harte, Jack is assigned to escort convoys up and down the channel. During this time, he gets a reputation for lingering in port as he carries on an affair with Diana. Meanwhile, Stephen is sent on a secret mission to gather intelligence in Spain. Upon returning, Stephen is advised by Heneage Dundas, a close friend of Jack's, to warn him about visiting Diana. When Stephen does, Jack is angry and accuses Stephen of lying to him as to where he had been during his absence. Soon they challenge each other to a duel. While in port, Jack calls on Diana, but finds her with Canning. As the main reason for the duel, jealousy over Diana, has vanished, he is willing to drop the duel but does not tell Stephen. Prior to the date of the duel, Jack is ordered to raid the French port of Chaulieu to sink the gathered French troopships and gun boats and to destroy the corvette Fanciulla. On the way, the crew plans to mutiny because of the treatment they receive from Lt. The senior would be the fleet captain , or " captain of the fleet ", and would serve as the admiral's chief-of-staff. These two captains would be listed in the ship's roll as the "second captain" and "first captain", respectively. After , when they were first introduced on Royal Navy uniforms, the number and position of epaulettes distinguished between commanders and post-captains of various seniorities. A commander wore a single epaulette on the left shoulder. A post-captain with less than three years seniority wore a single epaulette on the right shoulder, and a post-captain with three or more years seniority wore an epaulette on each shoulder. This tale begins with Jack Aubrey arriving home from his exploits in the Mediterranean to find England at peace following the Treaty of Amiens. He and his friend Stephen Maturin, surgeon and secret agent, begin to live the lives of country gentlemen, hunting, entertaining and enjoying more amorous adventures. Their comfortable existence, however, is cut short when Jack is overnight reduced to a pauper with enough debts to keep him in prison for life. He flees to the continent to seek refuge: instead he finds himself a hunted fugitive as Napoleon has ordered the internment of all Englishmen in France. Norton decided to reissue the series in its entirety, and so far nine of the 14 have appeared here, including the most recent chapter, The Nutmeg of Consolation. Mary Renault had high praise for this novel:. Master and Commander raised almost dangerously high expectations, Post Captain triumphantly surpasses them. Mr O'Brian is a master of his period, in which his characters are finely placed, while remaining three-dimensional, thoroughly human beings. This book sets him at the very top of his genre; he does not just have the chief qualifications of a first-class historical novelist, he has them all. The action scenes are superb; towards the end, far from being aware that one is reading what is, physically, a fairly long book, one notes with dismay that there is not much more to come A brilliant book. Library Journal found this to be a "rich blend of adventure, romance, and intrigue", reviewing an audio book version read by John Lee [12] and "Recommended for most collections. Mr O'Brian is particularly pleased when he is compared to Jane Austen, whom he reveres as the finest of all English novelists. First editions of most of her novels share shelf space in his small library here with first editions of Gibbon and Dr. The second book of the series, Post Captain, set mostly in country houses and as much a novel of manners as a sea story, has been said to be Mr. O'Brian's homage to Ms. In a more recent review, author Jo Walton finds this the book in the series with the poorest plot structure-"broken- backed", though complimenting the characters and incidents.
