Every melodious poem in the very head of the body of learning is donum Dei; recite it and dissect its sense — it is clearly the gift of God. 31 Noble men would have no knowledge of their traditions and nobility; allow these to be composed in poetry or else bid farewell to their ancient histories. Phil. at the University of Oxford in January 1997. I had the great fortune of being supervised by Professor Thomas Charles-Edwards, then Reader in History at Corpus Christi College. Our tutorials were enhanced by the enthusiastic participation of Dr. Paul Russell, who was at that time teaching at Radley College, Oxfordshire. Professor D. Ellis Evans, then Jesus Professor of Celtic, guided me with great kindness and erudition in his capacity as my College Tutor. I wish to gratefully acknowledge the support of the Board of Jesus College, the Trustees of the Sir John Rhŷs Studentship and the Board of the School of Celtic Studies at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies for providing me with scholarships which enabled me to complete the work on the thesis upon which this book is based. My subsequent career has taken me to the Sprachwissenschaftliches Institut der Universität Bonn where my research was encouraged and supported in practical ways by the Professor of Celtic and Indo-European Linguistics, Professor Stefan Zimmer, and thereafter to the Keough Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame where I was supported by Professor Seamus Deane and Professor Peter Mc Quillan.
