So, the next best thing was just getting to ride a glorious steed on a visiting carnival merry-go-round. Holding my Mom’s hand, I impatiently waited in line, picking out “my horse” from those that mer- rily circled before me. No lordly lion or red robed rabbit for me. No! A golden horse with the wildly tossing white mane and showy saddle, or perhaps the jet black stallion with his jewel-bedecked bridle and boldly arched neck! As the gate opened, I raced forward to spring onto the perfect prancing pony, hoping that no other rider would beat me to my mount! Then as the music rose to a crescendo and the carousel whirled round faster and faster, I flew by the happy crowd. On every turn I waved to my Mom, who stood smiling as if she were spellbound by my amazing equestrian skill. Too soon my galloping friend slowed to a halt, leaving me immediately begging for just one more ride! Years later, in 1980, when I competed before an international audi- ence in Paris, I experienced the thrill of circling before a crowd once more, but this time on a real horse! Through vaulting, the carousel ride of my childhood became reality, and 5,000 vaulting fans now replaced the carnival crowd. As I performed my freestyle, the impressionistic blur of faces, color and music brought back the childhood delight of those fanciful carousel rides. Perhaps more than any other equestrian sport, vaulting shares the fantasy, beauty and magic of a merry-go-round, but with live horses as partners! The vaulters, color, splendor and music go round and round before a crowd, whirling into a wonderful scene. Today though I still thrill at seeing and riding historic carousels
