Position Statement – Mandy Hurt While we as librarians strive to maintain strict adherence to national standards, the current library environment we work in remains in flux. In an atmosphere of Linked Data, digitization, Open Access and the long overdue push towards the use of new less biased subject thesauri, these standards are undergoing paradigm shifts requiring evolution at the speed of revolution. Through my continued involvement with NASIG, I hope to continue to evolve personally and to help prepare our community of scholarship to face the revolution ahead. I have been an original cataloguer of both current and rare material serials for over a decade. Cataloguers around the world are currently acknowledging and reflecting on our inability to be truly objective due to the highly subjective nature of existing subject headings schemes. We are not responding as rapidly as the world is changing--as rapidly as we must to succeed. In the face of these difficulties, I want to help lead the development of a Radical Empathy approach, not only in cataloguing but in all library systems and procedures. My commitment to these objectives is reflected in my current service on the newly formed NASIG Equity and Diversity Committee. It is also reflected in my serving on both the Duke University Libraries E & D Committee (DIvE-in) and the larger E & D committee representing the four universities in the TRLN (Triangle Research Libraries Network). During my five years of NASIG membership, I laid the foundation for my current position by attending four NASIG conferences, serving on the NASIG Continuing Education Committee (June 2015 – May 2017), and in serving on the NASIG Program Planning Committee (since June, 2017). I believe in NASIG’s ability to lead the revolution ahead and would be honored to pursue my stated objectives as a member of the NASIG Executive Board.
