Once the ball is hit you then need to run around 4 bases to score a run. The team with the most runs at the end of the game is deemed the winner. Rules of Rounders Why are there rules in rounders? Rules ensure the safety of the players and the competition is fair otherwise it would be chaos. How is a game started? The order of teams batting and fielding will be decided by the toss of a coin. The home captain shall toss the coin and the captain of the away team shall call the choice of innings. The home captain shall toss the coin and the captain of the away team shall call for the choice of inning. What is a DEAD BALL? Whilst the batter is being changed or a substitution is being made and the bowler has the ball in the bowling square, the ball shall be deemed 'dead'. The bowler's Umpire should call 'play' to restart the game after a stoppage for a dead ball situation. What are the different playing positions when playing rounders? Fielding team – Bowler, backstop, in field (players on posts) and outfield. Batting team – batters, those batting, those on posts, those waiting to bat and those that are out? What is the role of the bowler? BOWLING (A) THE BOWLER The bowler shall deliver one good ball to each incoming batter, except the last remaining incoming batter who is entitled to have the option of three good balls. (b) A bowler may leave the bowling square to field the ball. (c) A bowler may not deliver two consecutive noballs to the same batter. PENALTY- A half rounder to the batting team. The bowler shall not bowl dangerously. PENALTY- Warned that their action is not within the concept of sporting behaviour and if it is repeated within the game, they will be sent off. Decisions on direction are based on the position of the batter when the bowler releases the ball. (b) A no-ball is one that- (i) is higher than the top of the head or lower than the knee when it reaches the batter (ii) hits the ground on the way to the batter (iii) would hit the batter How should a ball be bowled? A ball should be delivered with a continuous and smooth underarm pendulum action which may be bowled with spin. What happens if the bowler bowls 2 no balls in a row? Half a rounder is awarded to the batting team How many good balls does a batter get before they have to run? BATTING ONE GOOD BALL Each time the batter is called to the square to bat they have the right to one good ball only. How and where do you bat from? A BATTER Shall stand with both feet within the batting square and shall not cross the front or back line of the square during hitting, or in the course of attempting to hit the ball until the ball has passed. Where do you run once you hit or miss a good ball? After the first good ball is delivered by the bowler the batter must run to 1st post after having hit the ball, attempted to hit the ball, or let has let the ball pass them. What happens if a batter hits the ball backwards? A batter who hits the ball so that it lands BACKWARDS behind the batting line is only allowed to first base until the ball passes the batting line, when they are allowed to continue their running. What happens if the batter hits a no ball? If a batter hits a no ball they cant be out by being caught out or stumped at first post. Once a player is within touching distance of first post they have accepted the ball and score in the usual way. They can be out after passing first post. What happens if you are the last batter? They have the option of three good balls unless they are caught on any of them. They shall have taken a ball if they are in touching distance of 1st post and can be put out in any of the usual ways. If the ball is placed in the batting square before they reach 4th they will also be out. They are entitled to one minute rest after each rounder they score. This was open to abuse by teams using their best batters / runners under the guise of an injury. At the beginning of the match you need to submit the nominated team sheet including any substitutes, who may be brought in to replace any injured batter. If a player is injured prior to the start of the game, they should not be added to the team sheet. (a) Substitutes may only be changed at a dead ball situation.
