A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY, TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE FROM 1 MARCH 2018 EMERY WALKER TALK On 21 March at 7.30pm at Scott Hall, 47 St Peter’s Grove, Hammersmith W6 9AY, there will be a talk about Emery Walker and his house on Hammersmith Terrace. Emery Walker lived in Hammersmith and was a close friend of William Morris, Philip Webb and other leading figures in the Arts and Crafts movement. He was a highly influential printer and engraver and set up the Doves Press in 1900. The house he lived in at 7 Hammersmith Terrace, was recently subject to a major restoration, and the contents of the house reveals evidence of his friendships with some of the most influential artistic, political and literary figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of his personal possessions were preserved in situ; when clearing and cataloguing the contents of the house for its recent restoration, volunteers found a wealth of material giving an insight into the man and his close circle of friends. On opening a book they found letters from Walter Crane and Rudyard Kipling used as bookmarks, and the drawer in his desk still contained several pairs of Morris’s spectacles and a cutting of his hair. The talk is a tale of friendship, socialism, gender equality, celebrities, arts and crafts and scandal.
