UNDERSTANDING BRIDGE WEIGHT LIMIT SIGNS Recently, Franklin County has been required by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to have our bridges evaluated for carrying Specialized Hauling Vehicles. To fulfill this requirement, Franklin County contracted with KPFF Consulting Engineers to load rate bridges which met the criteria for this requirement. As a result, several bridges in Franklin County were required to be posted. The purpose of this document is to help Franklin County road users to better understand the bridge posting signs. Standard Bridge Weight Limit Sign . Single Unit Truck: a three-axle single-unit vehicle with a maximum legal load of 25 Tons. The example shown on this sign indicates that the bridge can only carry a truck of this configuration weighing a maximum of 4 Tons. Standard Semi-Truck: a five-axle semi-tractor and trailer with a maximum legal load of 36 Tons. The example shown on this sign indicates that the bridge can only carry a truck of this configuration weighing a maximum of 8 Tons. Combination Truck: a six-axle combination of a single-unit vehicle pulling a trailer with a maximum legal load of 40 Tons. The example shown on this sign indicates that the bridge can only carry a truck of this configuration weighing a maximum of 12 Tons. Specialized Hauling Vehicle Weight Limit Sign PLEASE NOTE: THESE SIGNS APPLY ONLY TO SINGLE-UNIT TRUCKS . 4-Axle Single Unit Truck: a four-axle single-unit vehicle with a maximum legal load of 27 Tons. The example shown on this sign indicates that the bridge can only carry a truck of this configuration weighing a maximum of 23 Tons. 5-Axle Single Unit Truck: a five-axle single-unit vehicle maximum legal load of 31 Tons. The example shown on this sign indicates that the bridge can only carry a truck of this configuration weighing a maximum of 25 Tons. 6-Axle Single Unit Truck: a six-axle single-unit vehicle with a maximum legal load of 34.7 Tons. The example shown on this sign indicates that the bridge can only carry a truck of this configuration weighing a maximum of 26 Tons. 7-Axle Single Unit Truck: a seven-axle single-unit vehicle with a maximum legal load of 38.7 Tons. The example shown on this sign indicates that the bridge can only carry a truck of this configuration weighing a maximum of 27 Tons. .
