Introduction This Technical Note explains how to export images and data folders from Image Studio Software and when each method should be used. Exporting data and images to a customizable PDF called a Lab Book is also explained. II. Explanation of Exportable Image Formats Images can be exported from Image Studio Software as JPEG, TIFF, or PNG files at 150, 300, or 600 dots per inch (dpi) resolution. During export, images can be resized and the chosen resolution will remain the same after resizing. JPEG File Type When a JPEG image is exported, an algorithm creates an image that appears like the original but is "compressed" to use less file space. The smaller file size makes JPEG images useful for web pages, presentation software, and general printing (e.g. a lab notebook). NOTE: Do not quantify JPEG images. The image data have been altered in the export process. NOTE:Image Studio Software uses a moderate JPEG compression that may cause a "halo" to appear around bands. PNG File Type PNG images are created using an algorithm that compresses the original image to take up less file space without any loss of information. The smaller file size makes PNG images useful for applications such as web pages, presentation software, and general printing (e.g. lab notebooks). TIFF File Type Use TIFF images for applications that require the highest fidelity. Usually, TIFF images at 300 or 600 dots per inch (dpi) are appropriate for journal publication. Exporting Images and Movies: For Presentation Only To view the Presentation Only export options, click the Image Studio Application menu and hover over Export to expand the Export menu. The three Presentation Only options are: l Single Image View l Multiple Image View l Movie Export Single Image View Hover over Single Image View to expand the menu's three options: Current Image This option will export the image that is currently selected in the Images Table. MORE INFO: See "Using the Export Dialog Box: for Single Image View and Multiple Image View" on page 6 for how to change the image resolution, file type, destination folder for the exported image, and file name. Selected Images in the Images Table This option will export all selected images in the Images Table as individual images. To distinguish exported images, be sure to include a variable that will be unique to each image using the Edit File Name dialog box (see "Using the Insert Button to Add Images Table Values to File Name" on page 8). Image Studio™ Software Export Guide - Page 5 MORE INFO: See "Using the Export Dialog Box: for Single Image View and Multiple Image View" on the next page for how to change the image resolution, file type, destination folder for the exported image, and file name. Export Color Bar Only NOTE: The check box next to Color Bar in the Analysis tab must be enabled for a Color Bar to be exported. NOTE: When exporting linked images using Multiple Image View, the option to export the color bar as a separate file does not work. The color bar from an image can be exported by itself to compare images in a presentation, publication, or lab notebook. l In the Export Color Bar dialog, the font size, bar width, bar length, and horizontal or vertical orientation of the bar can be adjusted. l Use the Browse button to find the appropriate location to export the color bar. l See "Naming the Exported Image Using the File Name Text Field" on page 7 for how to edit the name of the exported file. Page 6 - Image Studio™ Software Export Guide Exporting Multiple Image View Use this option to export all images currently showing in the Images Table as thumbnails to a single composite image regardless of which images are selected. Filter the Images Table so only the images that need to be exported are showing. MORE INFO: See "Using the Export Dialog Box: for Single Image View and Multiple Image View" below for how to change the image resolution, file type, destination folder for the exported image, and file name. Exporting from Single Image View or Multiple Image View Without Annotations Images exported using the Single Image View or Multiple Image View will include all displayed annotations. To prevent annotations from appearing in the exported image(s), do one of the following: l Export some annotations but not others: Find the Show group in the Analysis tab and disable the box next to any annotation type that should not appear in the exported image. l Turn off all annotations: Click the Features button at the top of the Display tab located at the right side of the window to hide all annotations (for version 4.0 or later). Using the Export Dialog Box: for Single Image View and Multiple Image View The following export options have dialog boxes with the same options: l Current Image (under Single Image View) l Selected Images in the Images Table (under Single Image View) l Multiple Image View Image Studio™ Software Export Guide - Page 7 The options in each method's dialog box will be discussed concurrently in this section. Resizing Images l Enable the checkbox next to Pixels or Inches to designate the priority value to be modified. l Adjust the size in the priority section, and the other section will resize to match the priority section. NOTE: Ensure the dimensions of the image being exported are at least as large as the dimensions of the original image (check by comparing with the Original column to the left of the editable fields in the Size box). Choosing the Desired Image Format and Resolution l Enable the box next to the desired format for the exported image. MORE INFO: See "Explanation of Exportable Image Formats" on page 3 for information about available formats. l Check the box next to the desired resolution for the exported image. The chosen resolution will remain the same even if the image size is modified in the Size box, as described above. Naming the Exported Image Using the File Name Text Field Click the Edit Name button to open the Edit File Name dialog. l Type the desired file name at the beginning of the File Name: text field. l Any unwanted characters that may already appear in the File Name: text field can be deleted. Page 8 - Image Studio™ Software Export Guide Using the Insert Button to Add Images Table Values to File Name NOTE: When using the Selected Images in the Images Table export option to export multiple images, use Insert to ensure a variable unique to each exported image will be included in each file name. Use the following procedure to add column values from the Images Table to the exported image's file name: 1. Click the dropdown menu to the right of the Insert button to insert a column value from the Images Table. 2. Click the desired value once to highlight it. 3. Click Insert. 4. A variable representing the Images Table value is inserted into the File Name: text field preceded by a tilde (~). 5. How the file name will appear after export is shown in the Example File Name box at the bottom of the Edit File Name dialog. 6. Multiple variables can be added to the file name. 7. To remove unwanted variables in the File Name: box, place the cursor in the text field and manually delete the variable name including the tilde. IV. Exporting Movies Use this option to export images: l To a QuickTime movie (.mov) or, l Individual JPEG images to be made into a movie using third party software When to Use This feature is primarily used with the Pearl® Impulse Small Animal Imaging System. An animal injected with fluor-labeled dye can be imaged at regular intervals. The Movie option allows the images to be compiled into a movie so the path of dye through the animal can be visualized.
