This fort and town are of strategic importance during medieval lines. It is situated at an height of 700 feet on Vindhyanchal ranges. This fort is accessable through seven gateways - the Alamgir Darwaja, Ganesh Dwar, Chauburji Darwaja, Buddh Bhadra Darwaja, Hanuman Dwar, Lal Darwaja and Bara Darwaja. The fort was a Chandela stronghold from 9th to 15 th century and remained invincible up to thetime of Mughals. Akbar tmally conquered it in 1569 and gifted it to Birbal, one of the "nrne jewels" of his court. Within the fort ,thereare two palaces - the Raja Mahal and the Rani Mahal as well as several other places of interest like Sita Sej, Patal Ganga, Pandu Kund and Budha - Budhi Taal whose waters are believed to posses healing qualities. The scope of the DCBB was initially confined to a few Census Tables and Primary Census Abstract (PCA) of each village and town within the district.
