Harris & Campbell USD 400 - 450 Two Tennessee Governor signed documents including a Civil War era letter written by Governor Isham Harris and land grant signed by Governor W. B. Campbell. 1ST ITEM: Civil War Confederate letter written by Tennessee Governor, Isham Harris, Richmond, Virginia, March 3rd, 1865. Letter begins, "I hereby Certify that The exemption of a quoram of the County Court of Sullivan County Tennessee is necessary to be exempt from Confederate Military Service, . ." signed Isham G. Harris, Gov. of Tennessee. Additional paragraph, "Not having the record before me it is impossible for me to certify for each justice by name. IGH" (Isham G. Harris). Condition: letter folded in six sections with creases. Circa 1865. 2ND ITEM: Tennessee land grant dated May 1845 to William Blevins, signed by the governor W B Campbell (June 8, 1853), and additionally signed by the Secretary to the Governor. Overall very good condition with fold lines and some brown spots to title area of document. 4: Tennessee Governor John Sevier signed letter USD 800 - 1,000 John Sevier (Tennessee, 1745-1815) signed letter. John Sevier was Tennessee's first Governor, Congressman and a Revolutionary War veteran. Autographed document ordering Nancy Henderson to appear before the Justices of Washington County, NC in November 1783. Letter addressed to the Sheriff of Washington County. Signed lower right corner. Condition: browning at fold lines, right fold line taped on back of document with separation through part of signature. Circa 1783. Side 1: "____ Wife - The state of Nancy Henderson Cap. - February 1784 ___ decent 1783 - Cocke Att. Earnest Geo. Mitchell __ Sheriff" Side 2: "State of North Carolina - To the sheriff of Washington DC - We Command you to take Nancy Henderson if to be found in your Bailwick and her safely keep so that you have her bef-ore some one of our Justices of the Peace Here to Enter into Recognizance to be our Hiers and Successors. Content in regards to the loss of Colonel Rose's sister, dated June 12, 1952. Envelope included. Overall very good condition. 2ND ITEM: Department of State typewritten letter with handwritten signature of Cordell Hull (1871-1955), U.S. Senator from Tennessee, Secretary of State. Content regarding a trade agreement with Switzerland addressed to the American Watch Assemblers Association, dated January, 21, 1936. Condition: browning to majority of letter. 3RD ITEM: pamphlet "A Tribute of Fraternity and Respect to the late Robert Love Taylor (1850-1912, U.S. Congressman, Tennessee Governor) issued by Dashiell Lodge No. 238, Elizabethton, Tennessee." Robert Taylor campaigned against his brother, Alfred, for Governor in 1886 which is termed in Tennessee history as "The War of the Roses." Also includes a black and white photographic print of Robert Taylor. Condition: overall browning from age, crease to middle. (3 items) 6: Lot of 2 E. TN Civil War era books USD 150 - 250 Lot of 2 East Tennessee Civil War era books. 1ST ITEM: hardbound book titled, "Reports of the Committee on the Conduct of the War - Fort Pillow Massacre - Returned Prisoners." An 1864 Congressional Report of the Fort Pillow Massacre. 9" x 6" book, 170 pages. Report detailing the slaughter of African-American Union troops captured at Fort Pillow, Tennessee during April 1864. The congressional inquiry found more than 300 African-Americans (including women and children) were slain after the fort surrendered. The last 4 pages of the book show illustrations of soldiers who had been starved to near death. Overall very good condition. 2ND ITEM: Poetry book presented to President Andrew Johnson by the author, titled "Alboin and Rosamond and Lesser Poems" by Robert Burton Rodney U.S.N, Philadelphia, 1870. Estate of Katherine Bacon, Knoxville, TN. 13: Large Cherokee rivercane storage basket, 19" Height USD 800 - 1,200 Very large Cherokee rivercane storage basket, square to round form with walnut root dyed geometric designs. Condition: overall very good condition with minor breaks at all four bottom corners, a few scattered breaks at neck and rim, oxidation. 19" H x 13" sq. base, 15-1/2" dia. at opening. Pencil inscription inside: "Lottie Stamper," although the basket is also consistent with works by other earlier Cherokee weavers including Nancy and Rowena Bradley. Early 20th century.
