The CLC wrote a letter to New Pio- neer Co-op asking them to honor the boy- cott. Members of the Iowa City Federa- tion of Labor, Teamsters 238, AFT 716, CCI and U of I students all participated in a leaf- let action at the Costco in the area. They al- so presented a letter to management at Costco asking them to honor the boycott and stop selling Palermo Pizzas (sold under the name of Kirkland), until the action is resolved. The leaflets were informational and also asked the customers to contact manage- ment. The Fed just found out that Paler- mo’s Pizza is the “official pizza” of the Iowa Hawkeyes. They are planning more actions around this new information. The AFL-CIO just recently author- ized an official boycott of Palermo Pizzas, due to the company’s anti-union, anti- worker mentality. People are encouraged to call Paler- mo management at 414-643-0919, ext. 0 and ask them to reach a settlement with the workers and let them form a union. 11 12 Iowa City Federation of Labor—Iowa City Out walking for candidates in Eastern Iowa. I am proud to welcome back to Iowa, Governor Martin O'Malley, as this year’s special guest for the 35th Harkin Steak Fry! On Sunday, September 16th from 1:00-4:00pm we’ll gather once again at the Warren County Fairgrounds in Indianola for food, fun and good conversation. Get your ticket for the 35th Harkin Steak Fry today! As Governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley is demonstrating real leadership to create jobs and expand opportunity. Under his leadership, Maryland has the #1 public schools system in the nation and his policies have helped to drive violent crime down in Maryland to 35-year lows. O’Malley has been an outspoken advocate for why we must re-elect President Obama to keep our country moving forward and make the economy work for the middle class. Ruth and I look forward to hosting him in our state and to having him share his thoughts on the political landscape at this year’s event. First held on a farm in Madison County, the Harkin Steak Fry has become a signature political event in Iowa. Past special guests have included Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Senator Al Franken and all of the major Democratic presidential can- didates in 2003 and 2007.
