A F T E R CONSIDERABLE ANALYSIS T AND DEBATE, WE HAVE MADE A STRONGER COMMITMENT T 0 T H E SERVICES T H A T JAZZ S E T WGL T AP ART JAZZ, B L U E S A N D BUE INFORMATION. WE H A V E AS A RESULT INF MADE SOME SIGNIFICANT C H A N G E S N THE SCHEDULING OF MUSIC PROGRAMMING DURING THE WEEK. I S E E STORY P A G E 2 I TH V WGLT BY GENERAL MANAGER, BRUCE BERGETHON THIS MONTH MARKS A SYMBOLIC TURNING POINT FOR WGLT, MUSIC HOSTS, WILL BE AUGMENTED BY A NEW "STRIP" OF SEVEN O'CLOCK SPE­ AS WE UNVEIL THE FIRST STAGES OF A FORMAT THAT HAS BEEN UNDER DISCUS­ CIALS, WITH NEW SERIES HOSTED BY MARIAN MCPARTLAND AND BRANFORD SION FOR OVER A YEAR . AFTER CONSIDERABLE ANALYSIS AND DEBATE, WE HAVE MARSALIS. THEIR SHOWS WILL JOIN FAMILIAR PROGRAMS LIKE BLUESSTAGE, MADE A STRONGER COMMITMENT TO THE SERVICES THAT SET WGL T APART: AFROPOP AND THE GRATEFUL DEAD HOUR. JAZZ, BLUES AND INFORMATION . WE HAVE AS A RESULT MADE SOME SIGNIFI­ ONE PERSPECTIVE ON THE NEW FORMAT COULD BE THAT WE, CANT CHANGES IN THE SCHEDULING OF MUSIC PROGRAMMING DURING LIKE OTHER BUSINESSES, ARE ADJUSTING TO THE MARKET IN ORDER TO SUR­ THE WEEK. LENGTHY EXPLANATION OF THE PLANNING , RESEARCH AND DECISION- MAKING WE'RE EXCITED TO BRING YOU THE NEW WGLT BECAUSE IT THAT WENT INTO THIS NEW FORMAT. TO REPRISE THE MAIN POINTS MADE IN MEANS MORE CHOICES AND BETTER RADIO LISTENING FOR THE PUBLIC. THERE'S THAT LETTER: CERTAINLY NOTHING LIKE IT IN BLOOMINGTON/NORMAL, AND NOW THAT WE'VE ■ AFTER A PROLONGED PERIOD (1981 - 88) IN WHICH WGLT INCREASED OUR POWER, GL T CAN ENRICH THE RADIO ENVIRONMENT OVER LARGELY DUPLICATED THE MUSIC SERVICES OF OTHER LOCAL PUBLIC RADIO MUCH OF CENTRAL ILLINOIS. STATIONS , WE INCREASED THE AIRTIME DEVOTED TO JAZZ AND BLUES, OUR WGLT HAS NEVER BEEN THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE NONCOMMER­ MOST DISTINCTIVE FORMATS. CIAL STATION IN THIS AREA. FOR MANY YEARS , WE'VE DUPLICATED THE SER­ ■ THE RESULTS, SINCE 1989, HAVE BEEN OVERWHELMINGLY POS­ VICES OF OTHER PUBLIC RADIO STATIONS THROUGHOUT MUCH OF THE DAY. ITIVE, FROM THE STANDPOINT OF BOTH INCREASED MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT AND WITH OUR NEW EXPANSION OF JAZZ PROGRAMMING, WE ARE NOW PROVIDING A INCREASED LISTENING BY MORE PEOPLE IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS. CLEARER ALTERNATIVE, WHERE YOU CAN BE SURE WHAT YOU'LL FIND ■ AS OUR BASIC SERVICES, PARTICULARLY NPR NEWS, SECOM!= WE'RE ALSO PROUD OF THE SUBSTANCE OF THAT ALTERNA­ INCREASINGLY EXPENSIVE TO PROVIDE, WE MUST COMMIT TO A SERVICE THAT TIVE. IT'S BECOME A CLICHE, BUT IT IS NO LESS TRUE FOR THAT: JAZZ AND JUSTIFIES ITS EXISTENCE BY BROADER PUBLIC USE AND INCREASED BLUES ARE DISTINCTIVE AMERICAN ART FORMS, RECOGNIZED WORLDWIDE FOR PRIVATE SUPPORT. HAPPILY, A SOLUTION TO THAT CHALLENGE LIES IN THE PRO­ THEIR INTEGRITY, EXCITEMENT AND INFLUENCE. IN 1987, THE U .S . HOUSE OF VISION OF A RADIO FORMAT UNDUPLICATED IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS: JAZZ, BLUES REPRESENTATIVES EVEN PASSED A BILL THAT OFFICIALLY PROCLAIMED JAZZ " A AND INFORMATION. RARE AND VALUABLE TREASURE."
