“Discover Your Language” training in Papua New Guinea Joyce Wood and Ray Stegeman, SIL Papua New Guinea Objectives DYL 2013 • Firstly, to train translators to appreciate the Aramba, Western Province (Trans-Fly, TNG) grammatical structure of their language, in order to Waima, Central Province (Oceanic Austronesian) improve their translation skills Abadi, Central Province (Oceanic Austronesian) • Secondly, to facilitate the writing of a tentative Amam, Morobe Province (Trans-New Guinea) descriptive grammar by the translators & mentor Angataaha, Morobe Province (Trans-New Guinea) Guhu-Samane, Morobe Province (Trans-New Guinea) Arop, Sandaun Province (Oceanic Austronesian) Limitations Malol, Sandaun Province (Oceanic Austronesian) • The typological diversity of PNG languages: Trans- Onnele, Sandaun Province (Torricelli) New Guinea, Trans-Fly in Western Province, Papuan Bauni-Pou, Sandaun Province (Skou) Tip in Milne Bay, Oceanic Austronesian, Torricelli, etc. • Mentors who do not have previous experience with DYL 2014 the language (family) Somba Siawari, Morobe Province (Trans-New Guinea) • Limited English proficiency of the course participants Finongan, Morobe Province (Trans-New Guinea) Bau, Madang Province (Trans-New Guinea) • FLEx software is used to interlinearize texts, but only Mekeo, Central Province (Oceanic Austronesian) with word-level glosses.
