The vessel is based on the latter’s BR67 design, and the first of class was commissioned in 2011. The final vessel was received in 2017. They are primarily outfitted for a patrol role and protection of the UAE’s EEZ. The Tornado, which has two water-jet propulsors, can carry out protection of convoys and destroy stationary floating facilities. It can handle: tactical reconnaissance; patrol and security tasks; delivery and landing of reconnaissance and sabotage groups on enemy coasts; counter-terrorist operations; and SAR. Target acquisition and weapon control systems include a 67R IFF and a Sandal-V surveillance and target designation sight. The ship has an endurance of ten days. Applications: corvette Length: 61.45m Max speed: 26kt approx Range: 2,800km Crew: 39 Main engines: dual-shaft CODAD Beam: 9.6m Draft: 2m Displacement full load: 560t 6 MARITIME SECURITY HANDBOOK ISSUE 5 MSH-05_p005-057_Vessels.indd 6 10/3/2018 1:17:41 PM VESSELS SPECIFICATIONS Austal ► Cape The Cape-class patrol boat was contracted to Australian company Austal in 2011 as a replacement for the Australian Customs and Border Protection fleet of Bay-class boats (see separate entry). The primary role will be protection and surveillance of Australia’s EEZ and maritime borders. The eight 58m aluminium monohulls were delivered between March 2013 and September 2015. A further two vessels were ordered in late 2015 by National Australia Bank, which will lease them to the Australian DoD. The first was delivered in May 2017. The support contract extends for a minimum period of eight years and encompasses a full range of intermediate and depot level maintenance activities. Further options can be exercised by the Australian Border Force for in-service support for the life of the Cape-class fleet. The boats carry two 7.3m Gemini RHIB craft in cradles at the stern for intercept and rescue operations. They are designed to be able to conduct 28-day patrols.
