My Escape By Jamie Dy When I think of my escape from reality, I don’t think of an actual place. I don’t picture a glowing skyline or a vast, beautiful ocean as much as the next person. My door to another world would probably have to be through music. Music is like an alternate realm of infinite amounts of universes. Music is my own world, a place I’ve created through chords and lyrics. So, what makes a song for me, my own escape? Well, anyone can make music. Anyone can write a few rhymes, strum some chords, and get a good beat going. But, only few can portray raw emotion and feeling in just a mere few minutes through audio. Lyrics aren’t just strands of words, they are a story, a progression of multiple feelings all reaching a climax. When I listen to a superb song, it feels like the words run through my blood and crawl up my spine. They echo with such power and permanently stay there, leaving a stain of emotion. It’s magic . I can listen to pop, listening to a simple strum and a beat in the background. I call it easy music . To me it means simple tune and then some lyrics. I prefer a song that does more than that. I want a song that uses audio effects to create a mood, to create an aura. I want a song with context, a song that can build a story up and end it in such beauty. When I listen to music, I get picky about who the artists is. The artist, to me, has to be unique. They have to have their own mark that separates them from the others. As if they were saying, “ Can you tell? This is my song! ” I want an artist who writes about themselves, and can etch their life into lyrics. Not just useless words thrown together or songs about heartache and drugs and such. I think the reason why music has become my own escape is that I analyze the song to have meaning. I enjoy a heartfelt song with emotion more than easy music with a message like love your friends! When you find the undiscovered artists or the underappreciated ones, you find that they are the ones pouring their thoughts into a song, not those who make millions making a sappy pop song overplayed on the radio. Music, to me is an intimate thing. My mental state and my feelings can show on whatever is pressed play. When I listen to music that I really connect to, I can get chills. I can get lost in the music, feeling like flying, falling, and just lying, listening to music. I can lose myself in music in what seems like forever. To conclude this train of thought that is finally going somewhere, what I was trying to say is that music is my escape. Yes, my . When I listen to a song, I hear it how I hear it. I decipher it to my own meaning. I read the lyrics my own. If someone were to listen to the same song as me, we could have two different meaning for it. Everyone has their own story which chooses how we see things. Or in this case, hear things. This quote really ties together what I am trying to say, and it is such a powerful quote that really makes me think. “That’s one of the great things about music.
