There are 12 Upper Lakes (Gornja jezera) and the four Lower Lakes (Donja jezera) interconnected by a series of waterfalls, and set in deep woodland populated by deer, bears, wolves, boars and rare bird species. In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register. It is the most important Croatian hub for climbing, with over 360 equipped and prepared climbing routes, of which the best known route is the cliff Anića kuk (400 m vertical face).
