Welcome to Shade River LOCATION State Forest Nestled in the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio, Shade US 50 SHADE RIVER River State Forest encompasses 2,475 acres. Native OHIO hardwoods grow on what was formerly abandoned, ATHENS COOLVILLE unproductive farmland. SR 2 US 33 SR 7 In the 1950s, a few abandoned farm fields were planted STATE FOREST TUPPERS SR 124 with different species of pines including white, red and PLAINS SR 681 loblolly pine. In addition, many acres of native Virginia pine, shortleaf pine and pitch pine are present. Modern REEDSVILLE forestry practices are evident throughout the forest. Forest SR 681 SHADE RIVER management practices completed by Division of Forestry SR 248 STATE FOREST personnel include: crop tree release, grapevine control, forest health monitoring, prescribed fire, woodlot SR 7 SR 124 thinning, and wildlife openings. These projects reduce tree POMEROY SR 124 competition, increase vigor, and improve overall forest health. Timber harvests serve as an example of how our forests should be managed and the benefits associated with Ohio River proper management. Large blocks of pine are being harvested for conversion to hardwood species, which are more beneficial and have greater commercial value. The state forest is open year-round to hunting, hiking and general sight-seeing. Wildlife is abundant; deer, turkey and Additional Information grouse are the major game species. Many non-game Ohio Division of Forestry species also thrive in this area. Camping, swimming and 2045 Morse Rd., H-1 fishing are available in nearby Forked Run State Park. Disturbance or defacement of any property, materials, natural feature or vegetation is prohibited. This includes the digging of Ginseng and other roots or plants.
