Published by medieninformatik.ch 1 Welcome Address Prof. Jan Verhaar EFORT President 2016/2017 Dear friends and colleagues, Welcome to Vienna for EFORT’s 2017 Annual Meeting. It is a great pleasure to receive many European orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, residents and scientists, but also an increasing number of colleagues and friends from other continents. Over the years an increasing number of fellow professionals from Asia, Australia, South and North America as well as Africa have found their way to Europe’s largest and most International orthopaedic meeting. Europe is the historical heart and soul of orthopaedic and traumatology practice. Sharing our experiences in the treatment of patients with colleagues from around the globe is therefore a responsibility for us, but also a great pleasure. The European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology was founded in 1991 and therefore will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year. So, EFORT is still a rather young organisation but nevertheless represents all European countries and therefore more than 45000 orthopaedic and trauma surgeons. Over the last quarter of a century our members have witnessed how sharing our challenges and experiences helps us to serve the needs of our patients better, delivering better quality of care. So please, share your experiences, offer up challenging questions for presenters and let your views be known. The EFORT 2017 annual meeting includes a wealth of educational opportunities. Symposia and Instructional Lectures will be given by the most scholarly and distinguished speakers from all over Europe. These opportunities do not require any additional charges, being included in the registration fee! To encourage interaction among participants there will be Interactive Expert Exchange and Complex Case Discussion sessions lead by world- renowned faculty. Residents and those wanting a specialty refresher may also be attracted to ‘Easy Evidence Update’, which aims to provide key educational material to bolster knowledge, skills and attitudes and enhance professional practice. However, EFORT 2017 in Vienna will also be a platform for the exchange of the cutting edge scientific knowledge. There will be 680 Free Papers and 1176 Posters on the latest scientific and clinical studies. There will also be the keynote Michael Freeman and Erwin Morscher Honorary Lectures, which will be delivered by two highly distinguished European colleagues. In the Erwin Morscher Lecture, Professor Verdonschot from the Netherlands will discuss “Development of patient specific reconstructive methods using advanced imaging and biomechanical modelling techniques’. The Michiel Freeman Lecture given by Professor Kehlet from Denmark is entitled ‘Fast-Track Hip And Knee Replacement – Have We Reached The Goal?’ Running through the Congress programme in Vienna will be its key theme: “Sports activities and orthopaedic practice”. Many symposia and lectures will develop aspects of this theme. Highlights of the Congress also include e-health applications in orthopaedic research, hip trauma and sport, less frequent shoulder sport injuries, treatment of chronic bone infection, shoulder instability management and functional outcomes after UKA and TKA, amongst many others. Prof. Dr. Jan Verhaar EFORT President 2016/2017 2 TION Welcome Address C INTRODU Prof. Thierry Bégué Chairman EFORT Science Committee Dear Participants, On behalf of the EFORT Science Committee, we would like to welcome you all to the 18th EFORT Congress in Vienna. The EFORT meetings continue to mature, but it is always a challenge to put together an innovative one. We have selected a general topic some months ago to be incorporated into the programme. This year, the focus will be on Sports Activi- ties and Orthopaedic Practice. Sports activities are often linked to trauma with high or low energy, but also to degenerative orthopaedic clinical situations. Orthopaedic surgeons must deal with the aim of our patients to recover a complete locomotor apparatus available to redo the sports they prefer. Even in childhood, sports activities may have some consequences on the skeleton that we must limit or cure. It is one of our duty to modify the exercises the children or adolescents are doing to avoid diseases in the adult period. For adults, sports activities are now a usual way of life and is full part of daily schedule. Any illness, degenerative or traumatic situation may impair this process. Demands coming from our patients arise in our practice. The Congress will share different experiences throughout the European community on those specific subjects involving upper or lower limb, but also the spine, with debates about how to manage the expecta- tions of our patients. Over the years, we have learnt that the most successful Congress activities are instructional lectures, debate fora, and symposia. With this is mind, the Science Committee Group has prepared a series of events covering the latest developments in orthopaedics and traumatolo- gy and their relationship with sports activities. Out of 3,116 abstracts submitted, our expert panel of scientific advisors selected 680 to be presented as free papers, 111 as clinical cases and 1176 as posters. The Erwin Morscher honorary lecture will be presented by Professor Nico Verdonschot (The Netherlands) and the Michael Freeman honorary lecture by Professor Henrik Kehlet (Denmark). We are very much looking forward to hearing their contributions. We trust that you will find the extensive programme comprising over 180 sessions, including the Comprehensive Review Course and lunch- time industry symposia, to be interesting and of great value – and memorable. Our Invited Nation this year is the Egyptian Orthopaedic Association (EOA). We will be pleased to learn more about the high level of expertise they have reached in recent years. We hope your stay in Vienna during the EFORT Congress is enjoyable and entertaining as well as educationally rewarding. Prof. Thierry Bégué Chairman Science Committee 3 About EFORT About EFORT The European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) is the platform organisation linking Europe‘s national orthopaedic associations. EFORT freshly re-centred its priorities and regrouped them around four main pillars of activity, tackling some of the most critical issues within the specialty field of orthopaedics and traumatology: • Setting-up of European Orthopaedic & Traumatology Education Platform (EOTEP) • Facilitate and disseminate existing work and projects in the field of translational research, with the aim of contributing better to clinical practice • The harmonisation of guidelines and clinical standards designed to support the decision-making processes in patient care EFORT would be proud to serve as a platform and reach out to the European Health Policy together with the orthopaedics and traumatology community. The centrepiece relates to education and setting up the European Orthopaedic & Traumatology Education Platform EOTEP, which is dedicated to Orthopaedic Surgeons and Trauma Surgeons for lifelong learning commitments of practising in Europe and beyond. The EOTEP is the new tool EFORT has developed as the comprehensive approach for those in search of an educational overview in orthopaedics and traumatology (O&T) and wishing to advance in their professional development. It has been launched recently and the website section dedicated to Education completely revamped. The second priority since the inception of the strategy plan 2016-2018 has been the re-assessment of the activities linked to the European Health agenda. Our wish is that the burden of musculoskeletal conditions in Europe becomes more recognized and be included in research and public health activities, to shape future EU strategies. There
