President’s Message The official ballot was in the last newsletter. If you haven’t voted, I encourage you to vote and mail your ballot in. It is important that you vote so that you can have the leadership necessary to move the club forward. We have many challenges facing us. We have had a declining membership over the past several years. This is not unexpected, as many social and collectors clubs are having the same declining participation. I believe that we need to expand beyond our borders and actively encourage foreign chapters and members. In this issue, you will read about The Coca-Cola Collectors Club, Philippines. This is an interesting group of individuals. Collecting Coca-Cola is different outside North America. There are not as many vintage signs, and the local bottlers did not promote the club in the same way they did here and in Canada. Also, being a poor third world country, there are fewer people who can afford a hobby. Old signs were often recycled and not saved due to space concerns. There is an active club in Columbia. I have reached out to them to see if they would join our organization. I also found that there is a group in the UK, but we only have two members from that country in our club. We know that most mass market items sold at Walmart and the like are probably not going to increase in value. Our experience has told us that vintage items prior to 1970 tend to hold their value whereas the items made since then tend to lose value. Part of this is the fact that items made prior to 1970 were not intended to be “collectibles” they were items either used in the production and distribution of Coca-Cola or used as current advertising. These signs, posters and advertising items were meant to be used and discarded. The fact that many were discarded makes the ones that survived valuable. Even if you take the same item used for advertising today, you may not see any appreciation since we now have a collector mentality. We are saving the things that were previously discarded and that means there is a large quantity of them still around. I often get calls and e-mails from relatives of collectors who have passed away asking for outlets for their relatives collection. Often these collections consist of the mass merchandise items I mentioned previously. Unfortunately, I have to tell them that the items are worth maybe 20% of the initial retail. I also tell them that the items are more suited and will bring a higher price at a yard sale than at a collector auction or internet auction site. We need to encourage those people who collect the newer items as they tend to be younger people. The cost of vintage items may discourage younger people from collecting due to the cost. Most of us started out collecting items of lesser value and then blossomed into the more expensive vintage items. There has long been a division between members who collect the vintage items and those who collect the newer things. We need to be able to encourage and support both groups.\ I look forward to seeing you at the Convention in Glendale at the end of the month. It has been in existence about five years and is a very interesting museum to visit. It is difficult to see all of the exhibits in one afternoon. ”Their mission to collect, preserve and make accessible instruments from every country in the world.
