Track Record label, Are You Experienced was initially issued in mono and then 'enhanced stereo' on later issues. These tracks appear on later releases. Polydor releases in Europe had the words "Jimi Hendrix" placed above the title. These later issues were 'enhanced stereo', with tracks listed on the back. The Polydor issue in South Africa, conscious of apartheid at that time, is simply text Are You Experienced? a red background. Art directed by Ed Thrasher this August '67 release cover uses a Karl Ferris infra-red fish-eye photo, with purple psychedelic text on yellow. There is a key Are You Experienced? to the tracks on this album, with some removed and replaced by the singles, plus a change to the running order. The spelling "Foxey Lady" appears in Are You Experienced? of these issues. The 'controversially produced' Alan Douglas issue on MCA in presented the tracks chronologically and two subsequent MCA reissues in each had differing track order. In South Africa the album was released by Polydor on 12 May in mono. At the time during the Apartheid Government of the National Party the South African censors periodically censored releases where the covers contained images of Black artists or where the songs Are You Experienced? anti - apartheid or contained sexual innuendo. No tracks on the album were replaced or left out, but Polydor did not put an image of Jimi Hendrix on the sleeve because the record company feared that this might lead to the banning of the LP and result in a Are You Experienced? loss. The LP was released with a pink and black cover and with no photographs or drawings on either side. Chandler was both band manager and Are You Experienced? of the album. I almost went that route but decided to give the Quality Records Pressing a shot I am listening to it now Go for it! Hendrix's incredibly imaginative experimental outlook is the linchpin of his albums, enabling him to realize a vividly colour-centric Are You Experienced? and aggressive electric rock aesthetic rooted in blues as much as it is folk-rock. On "Are You Experienced? Moreover, it was the counterculture and psychedelic movement that informed the album's spaced-out arrangements and surreal sheen, though refraining from venturing too far from hard rock mechanics undoubtedly contributed to the Are You Experienced? enduring universal appeal. Hendrix's revolutionary use of distortion and loudness is warranted, however, with his at once trippy and reflective lyrical material being equally remarkable and capitalized on, from iconic swirling and jazzy freak-outs "Foxey Lady," "Manic Depression," "Purple Haze", "Hey Joe" to sombre, even heartfelt compositions "The Wind Cries Mary", all of which encompass the full range of his boundless creative aptitude. Astonishingly, every component of the music accords so seamlessly, as if instrumentalist rock with an emphasis on esoteric lyricism, rhythmic sonic pulses and ear-piercing guitar wizardry was preordained. Nobody else but Jimi had ever thought to overdrive amplifiers, invent new production techniques to augment every composition or bury his voice in the mix so that the guitars were so prevalent. Hendrix's studio playing had to sound violent, brash and confrontational in order to garner the same effect as his live performances, therefore the guitars heard so extensively on this record are the driving and dominant force of the compositions, but Are You Experienced? also complement the discernible rhythm section, and all instrumental aspects harmonizing whilst being individually appreciable was crucial to any album gaining mainstream exposure. Are You Experienced? fortunately for Jimi, he knew to employ an equally adept rhythm section to enhance his own flashy, mesmeric playing. It is the powerful drumming of Mitch Mitchell and the funky bass playing of Noel Redding that provides Hendrix the valuable fortitude for his pop structures, turbulent, unrelenting guitar work and loud hooks. As a result, commercial success was granted to the trio, with the album charting within the top ten in both the UK and the US. Visceral, intense and transcendent, "Are You Experienced? It defies logic how Jimi's visionary approach and profound musicianship led him to record Are You Experienced? a fully-formed debut album of extraordinary comprehensiveness; when one considers how long it takes other musicians to reach their creative peak, Are You Experienced? is even more impressive to contemplate the Are You Experienced? of skill on display herein. As a british private school Are You Experienced? prick myself I felt compelled to read this book from the moment I read the blurb. And I wasn't dissappointed one bit. The book is centered around a cynical, horny and sometimes downright hilarious teenage boy on his gap year called Dave. Dave and his best friend's girlfriend are left in London whilst Dave goes off travelling. Dave ends up infatuated with her and so when she starts talkign about plans of the two of them travelling to India tog Fucking Hilarious. Dave ends up infatuated Are You Experienced? her and so when she starts talkign about plans of the two of them travelling to India together, Dave follows along with these plans intent on bedding her, as expected of a guy his age. As he gets to India he slowly but surely begins to realise that it was quite a grave error as he Are You Experienced? travelling with a girl that may as well be the oil to his water. The tale that then ensues is one of utmost hilarity, admist serious questions of teenage soulsearching and depressive lonelyness. One has to really commend Sutcliffe's impressive sucess at really capturing the real essense behind the whole Are You Experienced? year travelling 'fad' that has cropped up. And he did so whilst keeping me laughing the whole way through. Really a must read for anyone who's about to head to university, in university or even just out. Yes, I am a self-confessed stingy bitch when it comes to cash. But hey-it got a few laughs out of me, so that's definitely a plus. But anything else? I'm afraid not. I didn't care about ANY of the characters except maybe Ranj. Liz was a bitch. Dave was a self-obsessed twit. And the description of India was pretty basic, too. I could have produced the same book Nothing special, but nothing awful, either. I could have produced the same book or even a better one through simply using the internet for a country search.
