11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 2 CHILDREN’S CENTER OPEN HOUSE A special Open House was held at the Canyon Country Campus Early Childhood Education Center on Wednesday, October 24th as part of their 10th Anniversary Celebration. Some of their outstanding accomplishments in the last 10 years include: Opening in August 2009 with a pilot half-day program of 16 3-5 year olds and by Fall 2010 increasing to 24 children and a full-day program. In the last 10 years over 215 children have been served. The CCC ECE has provided essential, quality, workforce skills for approximately 150 ECE Practicum students. In Fall 2016 the program hours were extended to meet the needs of students, families, faculty and staff. In Fall 2016 they implemented the Outdoor Classroom principles. In Fall of 2017 they became a Quality Start Program! 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 3 ARCHITECTURE & INTERIOR DESIGN PROGRAM EXCELS For the 3rd time in 4 years, a team of COC Architecture & Interior Design students took home a trophy at the International Interior Design Association, Southern California Chapter, Haunt Couture event. This annual competition, which fuses fashion and design, was held on Thursday, October 25th at the historic Avalon Hollywood Nightclub. The students won for their designed performance “Footprint of Mankind”. Congratulations to students Natalie Aliaga, Ciara Asberry, Carol Marron, Maxie Rosales and Elisa Tardetti and their faculty advisor Holly Hitt-Zuniga. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 4 LIBRARIANS IN ACTION! We are pleased to have Sara Breshears and Jennifer Thompson as our new full-time librarians! With their efforts, they have developed and delivered 30 workshops on Student Information Literacy this fall – doubling the number of sessions during all of 2017-18. Over 500 student have attended these workshops gaining valuable knowledge and skills to help them conduct research and evaluate sources. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 5 COC MESA STUDENT WORKING ON VENUS ROVER! Tonya Beatty, a COC engineering and MESA student is working as an intern at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Tonya is working with a team on the Hybrid Automation Rover-Venus (HAR-V) project to develop a new kind of rover that is powered mostly by gears rather than sensitive electronics. The goal of the project is to be able to withstand extreme environments for longer than 127 minutes and retrieve groundbreaking data that scientists have been wanting from Venus. Tonya never thought she would be able to do something like this at age 19 and wants people to know that some things you think are impossible are really right there if you reach for it! Way to go Tonya! 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 6 COC’s CNC FAST TRACK PROGRAM WAS AWARDED! On Thursday, November 1st Mike Bastine, John Milburn, and Justin Wallace attended the 23rd Annual South Bay Workforce Investment Board Awards Ceremony in Torrance, Ca. The CNC Fast Track Program was recognized for the recent cohort receiving 100% job placement rate. The Center for Applied and Competitive Technologies (CACT) has been running cohorts through the Fast Track program for years and has maintained a 90% job placement rate. It’s all about building partnerships! 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 7 2018 CHAMPION FOR HIGHER EDUCATION! College of the Canyons was honored to be named “2018 Champion for Higher Education” by The Campaign for College Opportunity for our work in awarding Associate Degrees for Transfers. In 2010 The Campaign for College Opportunity sponsored historic transfer reform legislation that created a clearer path for students to earn an associate degree and guaranteed admission to a California State University with a junior standing. To date, over 100,000 students have earned an Associate Degree for Transfer and of those who enrolled in the CSU, they earned their Bachelor’s degree nearly twice as fast as other transfer students. In a letter to us, The Campaign for College Opportunity said that “College of the Canyons is a leading example of strong implementation of the Associate Degree for Transfer Pathway for students and is a model for other colleges in California to emulate.” COC will be recognized at the Champions of Higher Education celebration on Tuesday, December 4th. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 8 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 9 INTRO TO LEAN PRINCIPLES TRAINING COCs Workforce and Economic Development team facilitated an Intro to Lean Principles training for L.A. Turbine. 15 employees of L.A. Turbine began their 16 hours of training on October 4th. L.A. Turbine is a design and manufacturing company creating application-specific, highly engineered turboexpanders that are used in hydrocarbon processing, geothermal power generation and other power- recovery or refrigeration applications. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 10 NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS TRAINING On October 13th 5th grade teachers from our local elementary school districts attended Next General Science Standards (NGSS) training at COC with Teresa Ciardi. These dedicated teachers arrived at 7:30 am on a Saturday morning to learn how to engage students, explore, explain and elaborate on the NGSS. Professor Ciardi focused on two of the NGSS 5th grade standards and provided teachers with lesson plans and an opportunity to test out grade level appropriate investigations (experiments). The elementary school districts are extremely happy with this important partnership. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 11 COC LAUNCHES ESL TRAINING AT MCDONALDS COCs commitment to bringing education to local businesses has lead to a new partnership with the local McDonalds franchise owners. In October our ESL Department began working with the first cohort of 13 McDonalds employees to provide English as a Second Language classes. This will be an ongoing relationship as we continue to work with employees from their 8 Santa Clarita locations. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 12 COC HOSTS CERTIFIED CONTRACT TRAINER CONFERENCE 30 Contract Education practitioners from throughout California came together to learn and share best practices at the Certified Contract Trainer Conference held at COC from October 23rd – 25th. LERN facilitated the conference and provided strategies to improve contract education units through data analysis and new techniques. John Milburn - Executive Director of the Employee Training Institute (ETI), Jocey Hogan - ETI Program Coordinator and Justin Wallace, Director of Educational Partnerships coordinated and participated in the conference. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 13 DEFENSE SUPPLY CHAIN & BUSINESS RESOURCE EVENT On October 25th, COC hosted over 30 businesses, government agencies, community college practitioners and economic development agencies for the North LA County Defense Supply Chain and Business Resource Event. The purpose of the event was to introduce businesses interested in or already participating in government defense contracting, to resources in the State that can help them better compete and win contracts. Brian Brooks, Senior Manager for Lockheed Martin Skunk Works Advanced Development Programs Supply Chain Management provided the keynote address and discussed best practices for being a Lockheed supplier. Congressman Steve Knight provide an update on what Congress is doing to support veterans and small businesses. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 14 APPRENTICESHIP FORUM HELD FOR CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT COC is the only Community College in California that has been authorized by the U.S. Department of Labor to offer apprenticeship for Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). On October 26th, COC and Goodwill Southern California hosted a forum at the Hyatt Valencia to address the shortage of Certified Nursing Assistants. The audience included employers, community-based organizations and community colleges. The apprenticeship model received overwhelming acceptance from the attendees and is on its way to becoming a model for the state. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 15 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 16 ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL STAR PARTY! The first Star Party of the Fall semester was held on Friday, October 12th at the Canyon Country Campus. Over 500 people were in attendance, including Roger and I! Guest speaker Anna Ho, graduate student in Caltech’s Astronomy Department presented “Dirty Fireballs and Orphan Afterglows: A Broader Landscape of Stellar Death”. Interactive science related demonstrations and activity tables were provided by our students, faculty and staff and our portable planetarium provided attendees with a special visual treat. High powered telescopes provided by local astronomy clubs and our own Astronomy & Physics Club were available for viewing of the night sky, which we got in before the rain began! This event continues to showcase our Canyon Country Campus by bringing in so many community members, families, students and staff! 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 17 LATINX & HISPANIC HERITAGE CULTURAL FESTIVAL The Department of Modern Languages & Cultures in collaboration with the Art Gallery, ASG, Sigma Delta Mu and the Spanish Program presented the 2018 Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Cultural Festival on Monday, October 15th. The event featured a variety of activities including art demonstrations, dance, music, handicrafts and food. 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 18 JOB FAIR AT COC Hundreds of job seekers and over 70 recruiters attended the COC Job Fair on Friday, October 19th on the Valencia Campus. The event is designed for employers to recruit current paid job opportunities only. KHTS concurrently ran a Virtual Job Fair for employers who could not attend the fair in person, with computers available to upload resumes. Workshops included: Setting up a LinkedIn Profile 21st Century Employment Skills 11/07/18 BOT Chancellor’s Report 19 LEAP ONTO THE PATH! A new LEAP program began on Friday, October 26th – LEAP Onto the Path will focus on the four pillars of Guided Pathways. Guest speakers and panels of experts are featured throughout all sessions where they will share best practices and successes.
