A level up from the Intermediate OLLI Steel Band, this class moves at a fast pace and focuses DATES: Sundays, March 22, on learning the different styles of music that can be played 29; April 5, 12, 19; May 3 on pan. Latin, jazz, calypso, reggae, rock, and even show tunes (no class on April 26) are all offered in this class. There is a strong emphasis on TIME: 11:00 a.m.–12:15 p.m. proper technique and learning the subtle nuances behind playing the steel pan. The class is highly music oriented and LOCATION: the participants will learn several songs each session, working Blair School of Music, towards a final recording that you can share with family and Vanderbilt University, friends. Students will be placed according to their preference 2400 Blakemore Avenue and the availability of the desired instrument. Participation in Beginning and/or Intermediate level bands is a required FEE: $100 prerequisite unless instructor permission is granted. 4 Register Now Back to Schedule-at-a-Glance > OLLI Steel Drum Band – BEGINNER INSTRUCTOR: Mat Britain, Take a weekly musical “Cruise to the Islands” by joining the Director, OLLI Beginner Steel OLLI Steel Drum Band. No musical experience is needed to join Drum Band this very hands-on class. If you enjoy island music like Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, calypso, and reggae, this DATES: Sundays, March 22, class is for you! The amazing history and construction of the 29; April 5, 12, 19; May 3 steel drums will be presented through mini-lectures sprinkled (no class on April 26) throughout the classes. Listening and video examples of TIME: 12:30 p.m.–1:45 p.m. calypso music as well as discussions of Trinidadian culture, past and present, will give you a taste of the Caribbean and an LOCATION: understanding of how the steel band art form developed.
