Freda Kelly was a shy Liverpool teenager the first time she saw the Beatles perform at the Cavern Club. By the time she had returned to the club for her 180th visit to see ‘the boys,’ she had been hired by the band’s manger, Brian Epstein, to oversee the band’s swiftly growing fan club. She would retain that position – one that placed her in the center of the Beatles’ inner circle – for over 11 years, beyond the break-up of the group. As the Beatles’ devoted secretary and friend, Freda was witness to the evolution – advances and set- backs, breakthroughs and challenges – of the greatest band in history. One of a few documentaries made with the support of the surviving Beatles, Good Ol’ Freda is the touching, personal story of a young lady who was fiercely devoted to her coveted position as the guardian of the group’s reputation and their vast fan base. On Sat., February 15 at 2 pm, the cast of the Internet radio show Fab 4 Free 4 All (Mitch Axelrod, Rob Leonard and Tony Traguardo) host “The Beatles Come to America,” featuring rare interview and concert footage celebrating the Beatles’ arrival in the U.S. on February 7, 1964.A number of local musicians will take the stage for a live performance and Beatles sing-along. On February 18 at 7:30 p.m., the library’s SoundSwap program presents an evening with leg- endary British Invasion artists Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde, better known as Chad and Jeremy. Formed in 1963 the duo quickly became one of the first groups to make it big in America during the British Invasion. After a string of hits that included “Yesterday’s Gone,” “A Summer Song” and “Willow Weep for Me,” they pushed the envelope of psych-folk-rock with such cult classic albums as Of Cabbages and Kings and The Ark. They appeared regularly on afternoon music shows and were featured on prime-time TV shows of the 1960s such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Patty Duke Show, and Batman. Acting commitments forced Jeremy Clyde to devote less time to the duo, and Chad and Jeremy spent much of the next thirty years in an on-again off-again musical relationship. Now they’re back touring to sold out audiences all over the world. This evening’s program promises to be an unforgettable evening of music and stories. The series concludes on Fri., February 21 at 7:30 pm. with a screening of Robert Zemecki’s comic ode to Beatlemania, I Wanna Hold Your Hand.
