Epoxy Resins & Curing Agents

EPOTUF® Epoxy Resins & Curing Agents STRENGTHEN YOUR COATING CALCULATING MIX RATIOS PERFORMANCE WITH EPOTUF® Calculate the stoichiometric parts by weight of curing agent per 100 parts of epoxy resin (phr). Formulating coatings for marine, aerospace, industrial maintenance and flooring applications is a tough job made phr = AHEW of Curing Agent X 100 easier by using raw materials that provide tough performance. Reichhold’s EPOTUF® resins provide the epoxy EEW of Epoxy Resin coatings formulator with a broad selection of epoxy resins and curing agents. Example: EPOTUF® 37-127 epoxy resin EEW = 200 Epoxies are thermosetting resins that contain an oxirane or epoxide ring and form infusible, insoluble solids when EPOTUF® 37-601 curing agent AHEW = 85 crosslinked with amine or other types of curing agents. Curing agent selection and conditions are key factors which determine the final properties of epoxy systems. Typically curing agents crosslink epoxy resins in one of two ways: phr = 85 X 100 = 42.5 by reacting with the epoxide group to become part of the final polymer network or by acting as a catalyst to promote 200 homopolymerization of the resin. Therefore, 42.5 parts of EPOTUF® 37-601 curing agent are needed to cure 100 parts of EPOTUF® 37-127 epoxy resin for a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. PERFORMANCE MAJOR MARKETS Calculate the AHEW of a blend of curing agents. • Excellent adhesion • Protective coatings • Low shrinkage • Construction / civil engineering AHEW of Curing Agent Blend = Total Weight of Curing Agent Blend Weight A Weight B • Excellent mechanical properties • Structural adhesives + AHEW AHEW • Excellent solvent & chemical resistance • Composites A B • Good electrical properties • Electronics / encapsulation Example: EPOTUF® 37-127 epoxy resin is being used with a curing agent blend consisting of 80 parts EPOTUF® 37-601 and 20 parts EPOTUF® 37-635. EPOTUF® EPOXY RESIN & CURING AGENT MIX RATIO To achieve the optimum performance results from an epoxy / amine curing agent system, it is important to use the EPOTUF® 37-127 epoxy resin EEW = 200 resin and curing agent in the appropriate stoichiometric mix ratio where calculations are based on the ratio of the EPOTUF® 37-601 curing agent AHEW = 85 reactive components. After testing the stoichiometric 1:1 ratio it may be necessary to vary the ratio of epoxy to amine EPOTUF® 37-635 curing agent AHEW = 74 depending on the application and desired physical properties. The table below highlights some general trends observed when excess amine or epoxy are used. AHEW of Curing Agent Blend = 100 = 83 phr = 83 X 100 = 41.5 80 20 200 + 85 74 Property Excess Amine Excess Epoxy Therefore, 41.5 parts of curing agent blend are needed to cure 100 parts of EPOTUF® 37-127 epoxy resin. Water Resistance Reduces Increases Calculate the EEW of a blend of epoxy resins. Heat Distortion Reduces Reduces EEW of Epoxy Resin Blend = Total Weight of Epoxy Resin Blend Acid Resistance Reduces Increases Weight A Weight B + Alkali Resistance No Effect No Effect EEWA EEWB Solvent Resistance Reduces Reduces Example: 90 parts of EPOTUF® 37-140 epoxy resin is being blended with 10 parts of EPOTUF® 37-051 reactive diluent Flexibility Increases Reduces to reduce the viscosity. This epoxy resin blend will be reacted with EPOTUF® 37-703 curing agent. To calculate the stoichiometric use ratio, the following information is needed: EPOTUF® 37-140 epoxy resin EEW = 185 • Amine Hydrogen Equivalent Weight (AHEW) of curing agent EPOTUF® 37-051 epoxy resin EEW = 675 EPOTUF® 37-703 curing agent AHEW = 93 AHEW = Molecular Weight of Amine or 56,100 EEW of Epoxy Resin Blend = 100 = 200 phr = 93 X 100 = 47 # of Amine Hydrogens (Amine Value) x (Average # H’s per N) 90 10 200 + 185 675 • Epoxide Equivalent Weight (EEW) of epoxy resin Therefore, 47 parts of EPOTUF® 37-703 curing agent are needed to cure 100 parts of the epoxy resin blend.
